Viral video of the incident posted online shows the man bellowing, “Lesser than us, lesser than us,” to a group of Black passengers inside a subway car and repeatedly referring to the men as “pets.”
“This is my home, you’re all going back,” the unidentified white man shouted during his largely incoherent rant.
“No, you’re Black,” he snarled at the passengers.
The maskless man was accused of being a racist by other passengers watching his meltdown, but he didn’t back down.
When the Black passengers wearing pandemic masks got up to leave at Bank station, the hate-spewing straphanger squared off with them, his hands clenched into fists, until one of the Black men threw a single surprise punch that laid him out.
British Transport Police told The Independent that an investigation is underway.
“(We are) aware of two videos on social media showing an incident on a Central Line Underground train on 15 August,” a police spokesperson said.
“Enquiries are ongoing, and any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact BTP,” the spokesperson said.
