A neighborhood scrape in Utah nearly turned deadly when a man swung an ax at a teenager’s head.
Phelan Silas, 23, nearly took off an unidentified teen’s head with the blade as the two were arguing on a sidewalk in a Salt Lake City suburb on Monday afternoon. Silas was arrested and booked into Salt Lake County jail on charges of aggravated assault after the incident.Cops said the drama started after Silas got angry with the teen for the way he was driving. A neighbor who heard the two arguing shot cellphone footage of the attack. Cops say Silas swung at the teen twice, missing once and hitting him in the hand once.
After the two began arguing, the older man left and then came back with an ax. A neighbor, identified only as Tony, told KSL-TV he and his wife heard the fight and started filming when they saw Silas clutching the ax. In the video, Silas winds up and takes a full swing at the teen, who ducks just in time. Silas approaches again and takes another swing, this time nicking the boy’s hand, cops said.Neighbors eventually stepped in and broke up the fight, cops said. The teen was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.Tony told KSL that, although the neighborhood “wasn’t the best,” he was shocked by what he saw. “I never had any idea that it would escalate so fast, from being a verbal argument to someone swinging an ax at someone else,” he said.
