A mother who was severely beaten and left in a coma is fighting for her life while the man responsible walks free after fleeing to Italy, it emerged today.

Maggio had been dating Laurie for a few months but she recently ended the relationship.

Friend Emily Van der Gryp and her son were staying with the Burke's at the condo, about 40 miles south of Cancun, and had left to go to the beach on the day of the attack.

Until Burkes' attacker is located, her friends and family have set up a Facebook page as well as a site to encourage donations to help with Burkes¿ medical expenses.

When they returned, Laurie was lying unconscious on the floor.

Emily told WFAA.com: 'She was having a difficult time breathing and her eyes were black and blood was coming from her nose and mouth.'

A security guard at the condo told police he saw Maggio leave the condo with a suitcase just after the attack.
