Blue pills for health and medicine purposes.

Here’s one we didn’t see coming.

The active ingredient in the erectile dysfunction medication Viagra could cause blindness in men with eye problems as well as those with apparently normal vision, a new Australian study has found.

According to researchers from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), sildenafil, the key ingredient in Viagra, could not only permanently damage the vision of a man with a hereditary eye condition, but also those who have normal vision despite carrying one gene linked to the eye problem.

At the core of the study is “retinitis pigmentosa,” a rare inherited disease that causes the cells in the retina to gradually die.

Persons suffering from the condition can lose their peripheral vision, find it difficult to see in dim light, and can sometimes go blind.

The genes that can trigger retinal cell death are carried by about one in 50 people.

In the study, researchers gave a dose each of sildenafil to healthy mice and to mice with a copy of the mutant gene.

The findings, published in the journal Experimental Eye Research, showed that the healthy mice experienced problems with their eyes for about two days. Mice carrying the gene had eye problems for around two weeks, however.

The Australian scientists also identified early signs of cell death in the retinas of the mice, suggesting that the drug may cause loss of vision in people who carry the gene for the disease but have normal vision.

“If cells actually die in the retina that would lead to blindness,” said Dr Lisa Nivison-Smith, of the UNSW School of Optometry and Vision Science.

Nivison-Smith added that people who have normal vision, but carry a single copy of the mutant gene for retinitis pigmentosa, could be more susceptible to changes caused by sildenafil.
