BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP) — Thousands of mourners, many weeping, lined the streets of Barbados' capital yesterday to catch a glimpse of the flag-draped coffin of Prime Minister David Thompson, who lost a year-long fight with pancreatic cancer.

Crisply uniformed soldiers marched alongside a white hearse holding Thompson as it slowly drove into the Kensington Oval cricket stadium for an emotional state funeral.

Barbados-born pop star Rihanna and Jamaican reggae singer Luciano joined Thompson's relatives, friends and various regional leaders to bid a final farewell to the leader who led his Democratic Labour Party to victory in 2008 elections.

The 48-year-old Thompson, who became prime minister of this Caribbean nation of 270,000 people in January 2008, died October 23 at his private residence in St Philip. He had been ill since March and travelled to New York several times for treatment.

Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding, who is also chairman of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) bloc, told mourners that the region "has been left much poorer for the loss of one of its distinguished leaders".

"All of us... will miss his wise counsel, his timely and effective interventions, his calmness even in contentious debates and that frankness that was so often tempered with his inimitable dry humour," Golding said.

Thompson had declined to discuss his condition until September, when his doctor revealed that the island's leader was undergoing chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer.

Shortly before his death, Thompson reshuffled his Cabinet to pass many of his responsibilities to other ministers. He made the announcement during a radio address instead of going on camera so islanders would focus on his message, not his appearance.

Freundel Stuart, who was attorney general and deputy prime minister, succeeded Thompson as prime minister.

Channelling Jackie: Rihanna attends the funeral of late Barbados Prime Minister David Thompson
She's known for her funky, ever-changing style and eccentric looks.

But Rihanna cut a far more sophisticated figure today as she attended the funeral of late Barbados Prime Minister David Thompson.

The 22-year-old wore a Jackie O-esque black hat and sunglasses, with a cream top and long black trousers.

Rihanna tweeted: 'Just got off of a plane ride and got horrible news that our little star Shannon Tavarez has lost her battle against leukemia! Way too soon… keep her family in your prayers.'

Rihanna and the late PM of Barbados, David Thompson

Amidst a background of solemnity, tears, pageantry and religious tradition, tens of thousands of people in Barbados paid their final respects to David Thompson, Barbados’ Prime Minister who died almost two weeks ago from pancreatic cancer.

The state funeral held at historic Kensington Oval, just outside of Bridgetown, featured religious music, prayers, tributes and a video presentation of his daughters and mourners heard Bruce Golding, Jamaica’s Prime Minister and the current Chairman of Caricom describe Thompson as a committed integrationist who said “what he meant and meant what he said.” He was a leader, Golding added, who in a short period of time at Barbados’ helm, showed he was committed to its development and as Prime Minister with lead responsibility for the Caribbean Single Market and Economy advanced the cause of regional integration.

“His timely and effective interventions, his calmness even in contentious debates that were so often tempered with his inimitable dry humor,” Golding said. “Today, we bid him farewell and even though we mourn his passing, we celebrate his life and we give thanks that he honored us by sharing so much of that life with us and giving so much of that life to us.

”West Indies Anglican Archbishop, the Most Rev, John Holder, who delivered the address, spoke about the “harsh reality of death” which was at the “heart of the Christian faith,” and which often struck “at what may seem to us as the most undeserving time.

”Archbishop Holder who is also Bishop of Barbados urged people to live in hope during this time of deep sadness.

“Do not let the pain and the loss drown out the hope,” he added. “For hope there must be if you are going to see today and this time of grief and pain as one of the phases that you are passing through. The trail of life that leads us to the gates of death may prompt us sometimes to ask if this is all there is to it. We may ask is there no more to life than a walk to death. We say yes there is more. For with the conviction of St. Paul we can proclaim that not even death can separate us from the Love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord.”
With several prominent Barbadian and Caribbean public figures, including Caricom heads of government, the Archbishop said that “Thompson has left us enough in his short life to inspire us to carry on.

”Thompson’s body was later driven to St. John’s Parish church where he buried. He had represented St. John in the Barbados House of Assembly for nearly a quarter of a century, beginning in 1987.Thompson was 48 years old when he died.

The funeral service and burial ceremony were broadcast live on radio and television around the world via the Internet.

Sad: Rihanna says she will never forgive herself for missing best friend Katy Perry's wedding

The singer recently spoke out about her best friend Katy Perry's wedding, which she missed due to work commitments.

And she claims to be overcome with guilt at not being able to attend the ceremony.

'I will never ever forgive myself for that, it was a crazy time, it was a crazy week, I'm switching management,' she told Ryan Seacrest.

'There was no phone service in India and very little-to-no internet service, so it would have been a little irresponsible of me. I'm sad that I missed it.'

The Umbrella star made sure to give newlyweds Katy and Russell Brand a fantastic gift - but she won't divulge details.

She says: 'I got her a really, really cool gift. But I'll let her tell you about that!'

According to sources, Katy and Russell had reserved Rihanna a room at the Aman-i-Khas resort in Rajasthan, India, just in case she made it.

One said, 'It was always sort of up in the air that she would go anyway, and Katy knew that.

'They saved her a room just in case, but they always knew it would be nearly impossible for her to make it as she's still finishing the album and it's out in a few weeks. Rih was in the studio all weekend.'

The singer is also dealing with the loss of her 11-year-old Broadway singer friend Shannon Tavarez, who passed away after losing her fight with acute myeloid leukemia.

I JOINED THIS SITE TO make and socialize with intelligent Women of Color with Dignity for themselves, and respect for others even when something is said that isn't how they feel. While I dont condone Amy's use of adjectives, I give her rrespect for not only coming to my defense but prior to that she disagreed with me in a very kind way. We don't have to all agree, but this is a poor reflection on all women, and defeats the purpose of this site. MUST THE WORLD look at ALL BLACK women as angry b******? Must we embarass ourselves with this kind of dialogue to each other? I refuse to continue in this exchange, I would love to make and meet new people from this community...but I feel dirty just from this ONE entry, all because I said i didnt like what Rhianna was wearing...this isn't my idea of Caribbean Fever this is more Caribbean Poison...get it together ladies...and the word LADIES is being used loosly...this is embarassing, and disgrace. Talkign like this will only chance our men into the arms of women who are not black, and cause them to not respect us if we keep this s*** up please let it go already!

Poor thing. I hope your kids turn out to be better representations of black citizenship than you clearly are. Obama is sponsoring a new program to get mothers back to school. You seems as though you could benefit from such a program.

Violence is certainly a horrible plague on the black community and I'm sorry you wish to perpetuate it, even in your poor metaphorical usage.

Good luck with your dating issues. It's difficult to pay attention to the discourse while being subjected to your tacky blurry photo on the discussion screen. I’m sure the rest of the Caribbean community is uninterested in your attempts to seduce a man via a Nicki Minaj article. I do hope however, that internet dating will help turn you into more of a lady. As always carry on with the foolery. This is certainly helping with supportive data for my thesis; “Who is Perpetuating Negative Stereotypes about Black Women? White People, Black men or Black Women themselves?” Feel free to look me up on Jstor, it'll be published this semester.

BTW your portrayal of Mammy, Sapphire and Jezebel are right on point, clinical even.

Carry on wayward woman, God isn't done with you yet
God Bless BIM (Barbados for less informed) and MY Thompson family
Respectfully,
Kiana
