Mama, the 59-year-old former matriarch at Royal Burgers Zoo in the Netherlands, was curled up in a ball and refusing food until the arrival of Professor Jan van Hooff, who she had known since 1972

  • Mama, 59, had been matriarch at Royal Burgers Zoo, Arnhem in the Netherlands
  • But in April 2016, she was terminally ill and refusing food and water while dying
  • Then her old friend, Professor Jan van Hooff, came to see her and pay respects
  • Once she noticed it was him, she reacted in pure delight and gave him a smile

This is the magical moment a dying chimpanzee recognises her old friend and gives him an emotional farewell.

Screeching with pleasure and smiling in delight, Mama can be seen stretching out her hand and stroking Professor van Hooff's head in greeting.

Initially she had not recognised him and persisted in her unresponsive behaviour.

Tansy Aspinall has lived an interesting life. As a child, she helped her family rehabilitate captive gorillas before releasing them into the wild in West Africa. Although she grew up around gorillas, it had been 12 years since Tansy had seen Djalta and Bimms, two gorillas that she had an especially close bond with.

But when Tansy went with her father on a recent trip back to West Africa, she made a discovery that she’ll never forget.

Animals are so much better than people most of the time. They have an unconditional love that usually lasts forever. People really can learn a thing or two by observing them. We as humans really need to get it together. What a heartfelt video. Thanks for sharing this story.

Can't imagine that these "people" hunt them down for game and sporting attractions...Karma is real.

That was beautiful, but I just don't understand how we as humans can't seem to find the same compassion, love and understanding for each other.
