Vybz Kartel Can No Longer Record Music In Prison Says Security Minister
The date was set during a court hearing on Tuesday between lawyers representing the defense and the prosecution. Last month, a judge granted Vybz Kartel the green light to proceed with his appeal after reviewing documents submitted by his legal team. Kartel, born Adidja Palmer, Shawn “Storm” Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St. John were all convicted of the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams in March 2014. All four men are appealing their conviction, citing numerous issues with their trial including witness intimidation and tampering with evidence by law enforcement officials.
Defense attorneys will still have to submit their skeletal argument to the Jamaica Appeal Court by June and file authority by July. The prosecution is also expected to make their counter arguments by the end of July and after which judges will have time to review their submission ahead of the appeal trial in February next year. Vybz Kartel and his co-convicts have maintained their innocence. If the Appeal Court holds their conviction in tact, they will continue to serve their life sentences without any chance of filing another appeal. Kartel says he feels confident that the Appeal Court will vindicate him.
Despite being behind bars since 2011, Vybz Kartel manages to stay relevant in dancehall by releasing a steady supply of new music. The aced dancehall star also came under heavy scrutiny earlier this year for allegedly illegally recording music in prison. He has denied the allegations and correctional officials say they found no evidence that he has been recording behind bars. Still, the controversy was enough for the correctional department to tighten up security inside prisons. The deejay also said that he has a vast catalog of previously recorded unreleased music and that is where his new music is coming from ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Listen! Vybz Kartel Addresses Lisa Hanna In New Single
While there is still no proof that Vybz Kartel was recording music in prison, almost every dancehall fans think that he was and by doing so he was doing it illegally. Jamaica’s minister of national security, Robert Montague, revealed in the House of Representatives on Wednesday that artists behind bars can no longer record music illegally. Corrections Commissioner Ina Hunter also revealed last month that the department has an open investigation into claims that Vybz Kartel has been recording music in prison, but so far there is no evidence to back up the claims. Vybz Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, has denied the allegations saying that he has not and cannot record music in prison. The self-proclaim Worl’Boss is currently serving a life sentence for a murder conviction. Robert Montague’s announcement comes just a few months after Member of Parliament Lisa Hanna commented on the controversy saying that Vybz Kartel’s music should be banned from the airwavesbecause he is a convicted felon.

Vybz Kartel quietly addresses Lisa Hanna statement about banning his music on his new single “Poca Man Skank.”
The new track was produced by Good Good Productions on the new Money Mix Riddim. The beat also features Yanique Curvy Diva debut single. Vybz Kartel went retro while deejaying about his struggles in the music business. “Parasite unnu love spread rumor / Unnu coming like slave for the Pharaohs / A couldn’t me them a talk mi no hear yo / Crosses mi naan stand up near yo / Mi never take no food from yo table,” Kartel deejay. Back in February, Lisa Hanna drew some heat from Vybz Kartel fans when she called for a ban on the deejay’s music from the airwaves due to his murder conviction. She also triggered an investigation into allegations that he has been recording music in prison. Vybz Kartel has denied the allegations and an investigation from correctional authorities turned up nothing. But still, the debate lead to a tightening up of security protocols in the prison system. Despite getting a push back from some politicians, Vybz Kartel is still dropping hits like its just another day and his management team told us that he has a vast catalog of unreleased music that he recorded before going to prison.
Most Jamaicans Thinks Vybz Kartel Should Not Be Allowed To Record In Prison - What do you think?
Vybz Kartel became the first dancehall artist to be featured on the TV show “Before They Were Famous.”
Host Michael McCrudden did a feature on the incarcerated dancehall star’s rise to stardom from his childhood days to becoming a household name both in Jamaican and in the global dancehall space. The show revealed some small details about the artist that most of his fans wouldn’t know, for example, some of his musical idols includes Buju Banton, Will Smith, Ninja Man, KRS-One, and Papa San. Kartel also started writing lyrics when he was 11 years old and has written hit songs for other dancehall artists including his former mentor Bounty Killer, Elephant Man, and more. In one of his old interviews, Vybz Kartel spoke about the violent content of dancehall music and how he believes it wouldn’t be accepted on the world stage if release in its purest form. “Dancehall music is so indigenous that as we said if it was to be put on an international market in it’s purest form it would be intolerable,” Kartel said. One of Vybz Kartel most famous moments in dancehall was when he assaulted Ninja Man on Sting 2003 and thus became the first artist in dancehall to physically attacked an artist on stage. Ninja Man recent weighed in on that incident revealing that Vybz Kartel had to pay him $3 million to settle the beef and save his life. There are a lot more you might learn about the controversial dancehall enigma, watch the video below. Vybz Kartel is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of his former associate Clive “Lizard” Williams. He will be eligible for parole in 2049 when he is age 72. But the artist is banking on an early release with a judge giving him the green light to proceed with his appeal. The case will be brought up in the Jamaican appeal court as early as later this year.

Lisa Hanna might be echoing the view of the majority of Jamaicans when she calls for a ban on Vybz Kartel music due to his murder conviction.
Since making the statement in January, Lisa Hanna has been getting a lot of bashing from a lot of dancehall fans. But she is also getting some supporting from some quarters of dancehall and it seems the wider Jamaica supports her views. ”If you are convicted until you are not convicted perhaps it is your music needs not be played on the radio,” she said.
The Observer conducted a survey of 2,747 Jamaicans on the subject and Seventy-eight percent of respondents thinks that convicted felons should not be allowed to record music and sell from prison. Let’s be clear, there is no evidence that Vybz Kartel is recording music in prison, but his music has dominated the airwaves since his incarceration in 2011.
Vybz Kartel recently got some good news when a judge approves his leave to pursue his appeal in the Jamaican Appeal Court. His legal team are currently preparing their opening arguments which should be submitted to the court by June this year. The trial is expected to get underway by the end of the year.

Entertainer Vybz Kartel and his three co-convicts were today granted leave to appeal their conviction and sentences.
Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, Shawn 'Shawn Storm' Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St John were sentenced on April 3, 2014 to life imprisonment for the August 16, 2011 murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams.
The three, who claim they got an unfair trial and that there was a miscarriage of justice in the matter, are now free to have their appeals heard in the Court of Appeal.
Justice Lennox Campbell at the time of sentencing ordered that Vybz Kartel serve 35 years in prison, with hard labour, before he becomes eligible for parole.
A corrupt juror in Vybz Kartel murder trial has officially been charged and his identity revealed. Jamaican law enforcement officials charged 50-year-old football coach Livingston Cain of Stony Hill, St Andrew with several counts of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and attempting to pervert the course of justice. Cain is scheduled to appear in the Half Way Tree Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. Police officers arrested Livingston Cain shortly after the verdict was read out in court on Thursday evening. Cops say he attempted to bribe several jurors including the foreman who reported the matter to the judge. Vybz Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, and three of his co-accused Shawn “Storm” Campbell, Kahira Jones, André St John were found guilty for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. Another co-accused, Shane Williams, was acquitted of the murder charge.

Vybz Kartel lead attorney Tom Tavares-Finson says the defense team had some success despite four of the five accused men being found guilty of murder. Speaking with reporters on Thursday night, Tavares-Finson says he is very disappointed with the verdict although he accepts the jury’s decision. “It has been a good process because it is a benchmark case because a lot of the evidence were new, new technology, the preparation was new… a lot of it was new to us,” Tavares-Finson said. “Our success, because we feel like we had some success, rested on the fact that we operated as a team,” he added. Tom Tavares-Finson says the defense attorneys will be sitting down to assess where they went wrong and also figure out the basis of their appeal. Watch video from the press conference below.

“I’ve spoken to Mr. Finson and plans are already underway to file an appeal,” the rep told us. “There were far too many acts of police corruption involving the case. In addition, there were no body and the main witness clearly concocted his story. We accept the jury verdict but Adidja Palmer is an innocent man being sent to prison.”

Jury Reached 10:1 Verdict In Vybz Kartel Murder Trial
After less than 2 hours of deliberation the 11-member jury returned inside the courtroom with a 10:1 verdict in Vybz Kartel murder trial.
Justice Lennox Campbell just moments ago sent back the jury to deliberate further in hopes of retuning a unanimous verdict.
Vybz Kartel and his co-accused Shawn “Storm” Campbell, Kahira Jones, André St John, and Shane Williams appeared to be five very nervous men inside the HomeCircuit court in Kingston right now.
Fans of the dancehall star crowded the outside of the court shouting “Free World Boss.”
Busta Rhymes Says Kartel is not a clown like Rick James for his shock value antics
Presiding judge Justice Lennox Campbell is now in his fifth day of summation in Vybz Kartel high profile murder trial in the HomeCircuit court in Kingston.
Yesterday afternoon the judge angered defense attorneys when he reached a critical part of his summation, the controversial BBM messages extracted from a Blackberry smartphone that was tampered with by cops.
The judge highlighted to the 11-member jury that the defense has challenged the authenticity of the data extracted from the smartphone, but still was not forthcoming about one particular message.
The BBm message in question is regarding Clive “Lizard” Williams’ body being “chopped up fine fine” and disposed of.
“Based on the language of that text the author must be of the view that that person would never return,” the judge said. “If it is that it has been concocted to cast aspersion on them or to get them convicted, it would be that that person would be found intact, even if they were dead and not ‘fine fine’. It’s final. It speaks to the disposal of Lizard.”
“It would be a most uncouth police officer to go ahead and produce a text like that unless he knows that Lizard would not return,” he added.
At that time Vybz Kartel’s lead attorney Tom Tavares-Finson objected to the judge’s statement, asking what time and date was the message sent from the phone.
“Your Lordship, may I have the date and time of that message because that message was sent three hours after the phones were seized,” Tavares-Finson said.
But lead prosecution attorney Jeremy Taylor interjected asking, “Is that an objection within a summation?”
But another defense attorney Pierre Rodgers shot back sternly saying “yes that is exactly what it is.”
At that moment another attorney Tamika Harris got up and angrily stormed out of the courtroom.
Yesterday Justice Lennox Campbell also told jurors that the integrity of the phone was compromised in October of 2011.
He also said that Detective Sergeant Patrick Linton admitted under oath that the phones were compromised by police officers inside the cybercrime unit.
Vybz Kartel, born name Adidja Palmer, and his co-accused Shawn “Storm” Campbell, Kahira Jones, André St John, and Shane Williams are on trial for the murder of Clive “Lizard”Williams, who authorities say was killed on August 16, 2011 in Havendale over two missing guns.

On a day when international artiste Busta Rhymes turned up in court to support Vybz Kartel, Justice Lennox Campbell began the final stage of the embattled entertainer's murder trial before it is handed over to the jury.
Campbell, who began his summation yesterday to the 11-member jury in the trial, said self-defence or provocation did not arise for their consideration.
The judge said the two verdicts open to them were guilty or not guilty of murder.
However, the judge said that the jury would first have to determine if Clive 'Lizard' Williams was dead.
He said if they found he was not dead, that would be the end of the Crown's case.
Williams' body has not been found, but the prosecution is asking the jury to find that he is dead based on the circumstantial evidence in the case.
Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, is charged jointly with fellow entertainer Shawn Campbell, also called Shawn Storm; Kahira Jones; Shane Williams; and André St John. They have been on trial in the Home Circuit Court since November last year.
Rhymes, an American hip-hop artiste and actor with Jamaican roots, who has done collaborations with Kartel, said he would not speak with the media before the verdict was read. He revealed, however, that he would not be leaving the island before the end of the trial.
RELYING ON COMMON DESIGN
Yesterday, the judge reminded the jury that the Crown was relying on common design to prove its case and pointed out that it was a plan to commit an offence. He said it did not matter how small the part a person played in the common design, even if it were a wink or a nod. He said the essence of common design is that each accused must have the intention to commit the offence and took some part in it, whether great or small.
Campbell told the jurors they were supreme on the facts, and if they did not agree with comments he or the lawyers made, they should toss them aside. He called for them not to have any sympathy or prejudice to influence their verdict. The judge said although they heard evidence of locking of guns, they should not allow that to prejudice their minds because the men's morals were not on trial.
"Don't say Palmer is guilty of the crime because of his lyrical content," the judge said.
When Campbell referred to the voice notes presented in the case and said Kartel did not say it was not his voice, defence lawyer Tom Tavares-Finson reminded the judge that the defence was saying that the voice notes were manipulated and spliced.
Campbell will continue his summation today, and the matter is expected to be turned over to the jury next week for a verdict
Vybz Kartel To Devote Life To Christ If Acquitted Of Murder
There is a tense atmosphere in the Home Circuit court right now as Justice LennoxCampbell continue to instruct the jury on what they should deliberate on.
Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Palmer, along with “Storm” Campbell, Kahira Jones, André St John, and Shane Williams are jointly charged for the murder of their former associate Clive “Lizard”Williams.
Today the judge told the 11-member jury that they should not return a guilty verdict base on the lyrical content of Vybz Kartel songs.
Justice Lennox Campbell also asked the jury to first determine if Clive “Lizard” Williams is dead.
Clive Williams body has not been found.
But Justice Lennox Campbell says the jury can determine his death base on circumstantial evidence presented by the prosecution. However, if they have doubts that he is dead then they should return a not guilty verdict.
The judge also made mention about the tremendous amount of evidence that suggest that Vybz Kartel was upset that the guns were missing.
At that time Kartel’s lawyer intervene and told the judge, “My Lord with the greatest of respect we have said the voice notes were manipulated.”
The judge responded saying, “Note that Mr. Palmer has not denied that the voice in the voice note is his.”
Justice Lennox Campbell told the jury not to reach their verdict base on an sympathy for the victim’s family or the five accused men. He also said they should not be prejudice base on the involvement of guns.
The judge stress to the jury that they should reach a verdict purely based on the evidence presented to them.

Madam foreman and your members you have heard all the evidence in this case since November. You have heard 24 witnesses for the prosecution and in my estimation four for the defence. We have had frequent adjournments. You have heard 6 closing addresses from Counsel at the bar.
It is now my duty to sum up the evidence to tell you what the law is and assist you in coming to your verdict.
Madam foreman and your members, you will recall at the beginningof these proceedings you all took an oath, some took an affirmation – and remember that is of great significance. It should not be treated lightly.
Madam foreman and your members, you should not let your verdictbe affected by extraneous or external circumstances. Recall the trial was widely covered by the media. I cannot assume that you all were insulated from all the coverage but recall your oath and remember that because of that oath you cannot take into consideration external matters.
A great Roman jurist once said, “justice is a great and constant purpose that should give each and every man his due.” I urge upon you Madam Foreman and your members that you should be devoted to doing justice according to law, nothing else.
The accused are before this Court charged on an indictment for one count. They are charged as Adidja Palmer, Calvin ..o he’s no longer here, Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones, Shane Williams, and Aundre St. John ..accused of murder. They are accused of murdering CliveWilliams.
Let me just put in a nutshell, the two cases.
The prosecution’s case is that two guns, or as they call it shoes, were given to Llamar Chow and Clive Williams to hide or to lock. The prosecution have led evidence suggesting that Palmer instituted a deadline for the return of the guns that had gone missing. On the 16th of August, Shawn Campbell pressured Clive Williams and Chow to the registeredhome of Palmer. The other accused men were at home when Chow and Williams arrived. Williams was attacked, Chow ran and when he returned he saw Williams’ lifeless body. Chow fled the yard but was pursued by Palmer. Palmer re-assured Chow that he had nothing to worry about. Chow then followed Palmer to the hospital. Chow was invited to follow Palmer to Guyana in order to avoid questioning by law enforcement. An odour smelling like a dead animal was subsequently detected at Mr. Palmer’s Havendale home.
No one has seen or heard from Clive Lizard Williams since the day he was seen by Chow lying motionless on his back. The Prosecution says there is strong electronic evidence pointing to the guilt of the accused.
That is the prosecutions case.
The defence are saying that the men are not guilty of murderingWilliams if in fact he’s dead. In fact there is a letter from Chow saying Williams was seen alive after August 16, 2010. That Williamsnever went to Palmer’s home but in fact departed the motor vehicle at a hotel in Havendale. That mobile data produced by the prosecution placed the accused at a separate location when the crime was said to have taken place.
They, the defence, have alleged a conspiracy on the part of thePolice to implicate Palmer. They have alleged that Palmer’s case was prejudiced by the National Security Minister who blamed him forcrimes in Jamaica. The defence have said Chow was part of a concoction.
The main issue for you jurors is to determine if Clive Lizard Williams is dead. If the answer is he is not or you are not sure then that’s the end of the matter you must acquit, because the prosecution have not been able to find a central piece of the indictment. Because in most of the cases before the Courts the prosecution are required to state a cause of death and lead evidence detailing a body being put into the earth. That has not been done by the prosecution. No evidence has been led stating that the dead body of Williams was seen.
However as you may be aware not all cases is it possible to bring such evidence. The fact of death may be proved by what is called circumstantial evidence. That is madam foreman and your members evidence that leads to one conclusion and one only. And before you can draw a conclusion that Clive Lizard Williams is dead all the evidence provided by the prosecution must lead to one conclusion – that Clive Williams is dead.
In the absence of a body death can be proved by circumstantial evidence that renders the conclusion of death. The evidence must be so cogent and compelling and above reasonable doubt that it leads to the conclusion that Lizard Williams is dead. If you have any doubt about him being dead, then you must acquit.
Recall there is a letter that an expert said was written by Mr. Llamar Chow. We are going to be looking very closely at that. Recall that the evidence states that the author of that letter said Williams was seen alive after August 16, 2010. Note that the prosecution are saying Clive Williams died a year after that.
If you are sure Williams is dead, you must then be sure that the evidence points in one direction – that the accused men killed Clive Williams. And I tell you madam foreman and your members, in a matter such as this persons may play different parts in an alleged murder but if they are found to have been part of one common purpose, that is to kill, they should be held accountable for the murder.
When you hear about a Common Design, there needs be no formality. Such a plan may be inferred, it could be spur of the moment that can constitute a plan, no official agreement is necessary. To find all guilty you have to be convinced that all played some party, whether large or small, in a plan which had one intent, to kill.
I must tell you Madam foreman and your members you and I are Judges who try this case. I should tell you we have slightly separate functions though and we should not usurp and take over each others functions. It is my duty to interpretthe law. You cannot say ‘bwoi my fren di lawyer seems like him know di law better than this Judge’. I am considered supreme regarding interpretation of the lawhere and you must take that interpretation from me.
In the same way I am supreme regarding the law, you are considered supreme considering the facts. If you think I wrongly stated the facts according to what you hear, I think it is Miss Harris who said you can toss it aside (* Judge Campbell has a wry grin hee*) ..she is correct, if I incorrectly stated the facts you can toss it aside.
You have seen the witnesses, you have heard them, you haveobserved them, it is for you madam foreman and your members to make up your minds regarding what you make of them, whether they spoke the truth. However you are not entitled to abandon the evidence and come up with a theory andmake up a theory not based on the evidence and make a decision in that regard. Your supremacy concerning the facts, does not entitle you to make up atheory. You are bound by the evidence alone, you must not allow yourself to be taken unto a path of speculation.
Look at the evidence, look to the evidence alone, not some speculation, not some conjecture. The evidence must be your yardstick by which you Judge this case. You must analyze the witnesses and by witnesses I mean those called by the prosecutionand defence. You madam foreman and your members must not allow sympathy to determine your verdict. You must approach the evidence calmly and dispassionately. You cannot have sympathy for Williams or the accused and to ground your verdict on that basis. That would be improper.
You live in a society that is violent from Negril point to Morant Point. And because these men are charged with a violent crime you cannot use the fact of the society we exist in against them. You cannot use the fact that guns are mentioned in this case to prejudice this case and be the basis where you formulate your verdict. I cannot implore you more strongly to not allow feelings of sympathyto influence your verdict. There is no basis in law for a verdict to be influenced by sympathy.
In this case you heard mention of the tragic death of a girlfriend, of a child that needs taking case of, you may recall the tears of Mr. Clive Williams’ sister. Do not let that influence you. You heard mention of guns being given for being locked. Do not use that to arrive at averdict. Their morals are not on trial. You are not to use that as a basis to determine that the accused are responsible for crime in Jamaica. You must look at the totality of the evidence related to – were they responsible for taking Clive Lizard Williams’ life.
You are entitled madam foreman and your members to take into consideration the demeanor of the witnesses. You may bear in mind how they acted. Particularly under cross examination. You may take into account the relationship between witnesses and their intelligence. In regard to this using common sense and yourknowledge of Jamaicans you will eventually be required to come to a finding whether you regard the witnesses as witnesses of truth.
Madam foreman and your members you are well equipped to come to a verdict. You don’t need to be dressed up in a lawyers garb. Don’t say because you are acting as judges here you are to discard your common sense. That’s the most importantingredient here.
I must remind you of two principles in law.
Firstly, being an accused man is innocent until prove guilty and it is the responsibility of the prosecution to prove guilt. An accused man does not have to prove his evidence.
On the prosecution’s case madam foreman and your members – there was a common design. They have outlined using voice notes and messages that Mr. Adidja Palmer was upset because two of his guns had gone missing. You heard a voicenote saying – ‘him an him mumma ago dead’ (Judge Campbell mimicks voicenotes).
Secondly, the prosecution are saying that Shawn Campbell knew what would transpire by virtue of a text message he sent saying people ago dead. Recall that Campbell on the prosecution’s case had persuaded Mr. Chow and Mr. Williams to Kartel’s home.
Recall Mr. Chow’s evidence that when they, he and Lizard arrived at Kartel’s home. ( *JPS cuts power supply here ..mic stops working ..Judge Campbell continues as if nothing happened* ) Recall Madam foreman and your members that Mr. Chow said he saw a girl at Kartel’s home on August 16, 2011. I suppose he’s a celebrity of sort, so people will always be following him.
If you accept Chow’s evidence – Lizard was not sick last he saw him on August 14, 2011. He went in on his own speed to Kartel’s homeand if you accept what Chow said – he was later seen motionless, lying on his back. The Prosecution are relying on testimony from Chow that St. John was seen with a block and Jones had grabbed Lizard from behind.
The next item the prosecution is relying on is the video. The video that Superintendent Thompson (Judge Campbell emphasizes the H) said was the House he visited where he felt a foul odour.
The prosecution are also relying on a message which they have alleged was sent by Mr. Palmer stating that dem cyaa find Lizard. Recall that there was an urgency in messages it was said was sent by Mr. Palmer regarding guns, that urgency according to the evidence led up to the 16th of August 2011. The prosecution r relying on evidence that that urgency disappeared after the 16th. Recall also that Mr. Williams’ sister has testified that they were close but she has not seen or heard from him since that date and they were in no malice.
Vybz Kartel is currently behind bars anxiously awaiting his fate.
The former Portmore Empire boss and his four co-accused returns to the Home Circuit courton Thursday when the jury is expected to begin deliberation in what has now become the longest running murder trial in Jamaica’s circuit court history.
If acquitted, fans could see a brand new Vybz Kartel. A close source to the “Benz Punany” deejay told Urbanislandz.com that he is considering getting baptized and devote his life to his faith.
“What a lot of people don’t know is that Addi is a god fearing youth,” the source told us. “He read his bible everyday and pray everyday. The system try to paint an image of him like he is a devil worshiper. But that is far from the truth, because you have to separate Vybz Kartel from Adidja Palmer and Adidja is a god fearing, kind and smart person. Don’t be surprise if you see him get baptized and change his image when him get release.”
The source, who requested anonymity, also told us that Vybz Kartel regularly lead devotion with his pairs behind bars and read bible scriptures.
Do you think Vybz Kartel will become a devoted Christian if he gets released?
Prosecution rips into defence's argument of conspiracy to convict Kartel
Vybz Kartel’s high profile murder trial could be forced into next week according to informationfrom the judge. The trial was initially projected to be wrapped up last week in the Home Circuit court in Kingston, but was forced into this week due to lengthy closing statements from attorneys. But on Tuesday, Justice Lennox Campbell says two jurors has indicated that they are only available in the afternoon on Wednesday and Thursday. This mean there will only be half a day of court sessions on these two days. Tomorrow afternoon defense attorney Tamika Harris will give her closing statements following which the judge will give the jury its instructions before sending them off to deliberation. This means a verdict could be reached on Friday. But if not the case will be forced to go into next week.
Vybz Kartel Trial: Prosecution Wraps Up Closing Arguments {VIDEO+PICS} Defense Closing Statements, Large Crowd Outside Court
Kartel... anxiously awaiting the verdict of the jury and very relieved that he got the opportunity to deliver his statement to the court
LEAD prosecutor Jeremy Taylor ripped into arguments put forth by defence attorney Tom Tavares-Finson that the police had hatched a conspiracy to convict his client Vybz Kartel, during his closing remarks in the murder trial at the Supreme Court yesterday.
Using quotes from the Bible, a former British parliamentarian and comparisons to a series of movies, Taylor painted a picture of an alleged plot by Vybz Kartel to kill Clive 'Lizard' Williams over two missing guns.
"There is no moral or ethical dilemma or crisis in this case. What you are required to do is weigh the evidence. Look at credibility and reliability. Do aspects of the case add up or is it a scattershot?" he told the 11-member panel of jurors.
Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, Shawn 'Storm' Campbell, Kahira Jones, Andre St John, and Shane Williams are jointly charged with 'Lizard's' alleged murder.
In telling the jurors that all the accused do not have to 'sink' with Vybz Kartel, Taylor poured cold water on the unsworn statement given by Vybz Kartel and his four co-accused even though he told the jurors they must consider it.
"It is not evidence. It is a lesser species than evidence but you must consider it. It is a right that they have. Evidence must be taken under oath," he said.
Taylor continued where he left off on Tuesday in asking for justice for Williams.
"How would you feel if a family member had been killed and the body not found? Would you not want an accounting? Would you not want an answer? Would you not want someone to say that is not right?" he said.
During the trial the prosecution displayed a damning BlackBerry message which was allegedly abstracted from a cellular phone ascribed to Vybz Kartel that said that Williams' body was chopped up like minced meat and would never be found.
Taylor used that message and also relied heavily on expletive-laced voice notes allegedly sent by Vybz Kartel, which spoke of the fate of individuals who had stolen the firearms.
Taylor said Lizard was killed to send a message to the entertainer's followers on what fate would befall them if they mishandled Vybz Kartel's guns.
"The finality of this was not a punishment. This was an abject message. You do not fool with Adidja Palmer's guns. I give you a ting fi lock, don't tell me foolishness. You really wonder why they didn't beat him up. Beat him up and take money from him. If they had beat him up none of us would be here, but it was decided that Clive Lloyd Williams had to die," he said.
At times during Taylor's presentation, Vybz Kartel looked jaded and defeated but laughed heartily when attorney representing André St John — Tamika Harris — whispered something in his ear when the court took an early-morning break. Co-accused Campbell, Jones and Williams also bore serious countenances as Taylor sought their conviction, while St John seemed indifferent, at times.
The panel of jurors appeared to show some interest in Taylor's argument, but only the forewoman was observed taking notes.
Taylor also questioned why it was Vybz Kartel's sister who had come to give character evidence on his behalf.
"The bond of blood creates loyalty within us. It is up to you to decide whether or not you can rely solely on the evidence of his sister. For all the gathering of Gaza, all the Gaza-ites or gazelles — I don't know what they call female members of Gaza — there was no one," Taylor told the jury.
Today could be the final day in court for self proclaim Worl’Boss Vybz Kartel. His defense attorney Tom Tavares-Finson chided the prosecution’s case in his closingstatement yesterday in the Home Circuit court, paving the way for lead prosecutor Jeremy Taylor to give his closing arguments to the 11-member jury.
A policeman keeps watch beside a makeshift tent on the roof of the courthouse.
Tavares-Finson, speaking directly to the jury, says the prosecution left them to judge a case fill dishonesty and incompetence. He said this case is a benchmark case for the securityforce to make sweeping changes to the way they do business. During his closing statement, Jeremy Taylor told the jury that there is nothing benchmark about the case and they should treat it as a ordinary murder case.
Taylor urged the jury to remember that there is another person in this case whose name is Clive Williams. He said Mr. Palmer, Vybz Kartel’s real name, was the judge, jury and executioner in that trial on August 16, 2011. “Where is Clive Williams, is he chopped up fine fine, is he mince meat?” Jeremy Taylorasked. The prosecutor also told the jury to look past Vybz Kartel’s show of emotions in court during his sister’s testimony, his bleached skin and his tattoos. He asked them to judge the case based on the evidence presented to them.
“When all is said and sone Adidja Palmer’s family knows where to find him. Where is Clive Williams?” Jeremy Taylor laments. After the prosecution wraps up their closing arguments, other defense attorneys will make their statements following which the judge will issue the jury instructions and send them off to deliberate.

Tavares-Finson says the case is nothing short of a conspiracy to convict his client for a crime he did not commit. He called the prosecution incompetent and it’s witnesses liars. Thelawyer says that under cross-examination the prosecution witnesses, who sworn to tell the truth, were exposed, leaving their case naked. He also told the jury that the prosecution left them to make judgement on a case that is fill with dishonesty and incompetency. Tom Tavares-Finson also complained this morning in court that the defense was served overnight with documents containing statements from prosecution handwriting experts George Dixon and William Smiley. He said the defense did not know about one of the experts and that is a breach of the protocol of disclosure and prosecutorial misconduct.
Tavares-Finson asked the judge to reprimand the prosecution. Justice Lennox Campbell is expected to make a ruling today.

Constable Kemar Wilks, a digital forensic examiner and crime investigator, took the witnessstand on Thursday and grilled by the defense about his handling of the multimedia evidence.
Wilks told the court that on November 24, 2011, former Cybercrime unit head Patrick Linton gave him a two compact discs, one with 40 voice notes and the other with a video. Theconstable said he recorded the contents of the disc in a statement.
Despite strong objection from the defense, the transcript of the data was entered in evidence.
Earlier this week, Detective Sergeant Patrick Linton, admitted in court that a Blackberry smartphone belonging to Vybz Kartel was being used while in police custody. Linton, however, refused to speak on the integrity of the data collected even though he admitted someone used the phone while it was in his department.
Under cross-examination from attorney Pierre Rogers, Constable Kemar Wilks admitted that video and voice data could be manipulated. The video played in court shows no faces just voices.
Under further cross-examination from attorney Miguel Lorne, Wilks, said he cannot vouch for the integrity of the data collected or the items he received from Patrick Linton.
VYBZ KARTEL TRIAL: Gruesome Details Of Lizard Murder Played In Court
Vybz Kartel‘s highly publicised murder trial is now underway in the home circuit court.
Kartel, born Adidja Palmer, along with Shawn “Storm” Campbell, Kahira Jones, André St John, and Shane Williams are all on trial for the alleged murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. Former head of the Cybercrime unit Detective Sergeant Patrick Linton has been on the witness stand since last week testifying about some damning video, audio, text messages and BBM messages allegedly sent by the accused men. Yesterday defense attorneys Tom Tavares-Finson and Pierre Rogers pressed the senior police officer about a Blackberry phone allegedly owned by Vybz Kartel was being used while in police possession. A number of cellphones were seized from the accused men during their arrest late 2011. One particular Blackberry Torch 9800 allegedly owned by Vybz Kartel, the defense said was being used in October 2011 while in police custody. The defense lawyers grilled Detective Sergeant Patrick Linton about the use of the phone, but the cop denied any wrong doing.
Linton says he received the phones on October 3, 2011, but did not access them until October 14, 2011. But lawyers say the integrity of the phones had been compromised since the Blackberry was used to make several calls on October 19, 2011.
Linton says the phones were put in a locker and the key for the locker was placed on top of said locker.
Tavares Finson even went further to suggest that messages alleged sent by Vybz Kartel alluding to him wanting to leave the island were sent when a bail application was made for the deejay.
Linton also denied that allegation. But admitted that called were being made from the phonewhile it was in police custody.
This morning in court, defense attorney Pierre Rogers asked Linton if he had authorized anybody to use the cellphone on October 9, 2011.
Liston responded “No.”
Rogers then pressed the prosecution key witness asking if he was protecting someone else. But the witness responded saying he does not understand the question and also denied protecting anyone.
The trial is now underway for the evening session.

@gsr i agree, where is Lizards family, not one family/friend of Lizard have we heard from, its been alllll about these musicians and vybz family speaking out. What up with that? @least someone on the dead mans behalf speak up for him say something like I'm glad justice was served, something. And to me, lizards girlfriend holds the key to a whole lot of this case, cause she was the last person he spoke to, does she have a book coming out or what cause she disappeared too. I Dont even know if she cares if justice was served or not. Bottom line its a shame nobody on lizards behave his mom his girl siblings nobody has spoken exclusively on his behalf and that is odd.
