Terrifying moment gun shots rang out on Hollywood's Walk of Fame after 'sniper took aim from his apartment window at crowds gathered for a memorial at Mexican singer Vicente Fernández's star'

Police gathered outside the apartment building on Hollywood Boulevard where shots were fired on Friday

The male suspect, who has not yet been named, was arrested. Their motive is still unclea

LAPD Sgt. Andrew Dineen of the Hollywood Division told the Los Angeles Daily News that the suspect will likely face either assault with a deadly weapon or firing into an inhabited building charges.

There were no fatalities or injuries. 

Cellphone footage captured the moment that the peaceful vigil, which saw people singing along to Fernández' music, was interrupted by gunfire at around 7pm Sunday.

Members of the crowd looked momentarily stunned before taking cover as at least four shots rang out in quick succession.  

Several news crews were at the Walk of Fame to cover Fernández's fans gathering in his honor, including ABC7's Leanne Suter who tweeted shortly after gunfire erupted: 

'We heard 4-5 shots. One bullet shattering a glass door across the street.'

At least one bullet shattered the door to a luxury apartment building across the street from the shooter. 

Police evacuated the area and surrounded the apartment building in the 6200 block of Hollywood Boulevard while police helicopters flew overhead.

Cops set up a perimeter around the area, with several armed units placed on roofs on surrounding buildings, until they could storm in and arrest the suspect, CBS Los Angeles reported. 

Fans and news crews gathered on Hollywood Boulevard at the star of Fernández, the beloved Mexican singer and winner of three Grammys and nine Latin Grammys, who died today at the age of 81. 

Fernández, known also by his nickname 'Chente,' died at 6:15 a.m. in a hospital in Jalisco state, his family said. Funeral plans were not announced. 

Fernández sold more than 50 million records and appeared in more than 30 films. In April 2016, he said goodbye to the stage before about 85,000 people in Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
