Teen who stabbed classmate says he ‘snapped’ over being bullied

My son was NOT a racist, homophobic bully: Stepdad of boy, 15, who was stabbed to death by 'tormented' teenager speaks out

The Bronx teenager who fatally stabbed a classmate in the classroom said that he “snapped” after he was being bullied and only meant to scare the other teen.
“I guess I just snapped,” Abel Cedeno told the New York Daily News in an interview from Rikers Island. “I didn’t mean to kill him.”
“They bully me because I’m different,” he explained. “I’m not like the other guys. My voice is higher.”
Cedeno’s friends claimed that he had been the target of bullying based on his ethnicity as well as accusations that he was gay. They said he had been bullied since school began three weeks ago.
Cedeno is currently being held without bail and is on suicide watch after stabbing Matthew McRee, 15, and Ariane Laboy, 16, during a history class at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation. He said that because of the bullying, he had purchased a switchblade two weeks prior to the stabbing “to protect myself.”
However, police said that neither of the two boys who were stabbed on Wednesday had any history with Cedeno.

The stepfather of a teenage boy who was stabbed to death in high school after allegedly harassing his 'flamboyant' classmate has said his stepson was no bully.

Kyle Victor, 34, defended his 15-year-old son Matthew McCree after the horrifying classroom attack, saying he was 'in no way bad', and claims the media is making his son look homophobic.

'Matthew was not like that at all and they're making it look like Matthew did not like gay people,' Victor told the New York Post.

Ariane LaBoy, a friend of McCree's, is now fighting for his life in hospital after he was also stabbed in the chest.

Cedeno told reporters and police that the pair relentlessly tormented him with homophobic slurs in class and was targeted him for his 'flamboyant' personality.

But Victor said his stepson - who he raised from the age of seven - was actually 'very loving', according to the Post.

He added: 'Every child has their little ways and you know a 15-year-old — emotions and hormones running around — but he was in no way bad.'

Victor also attacked the media for making McCree out to be villain in the story.

He explained: 'They need to ask the right questions first before they paint someone and make them look like they're some mean person.

McCree also attacked the school for not having metal detectors at its entrances.

The incident took place about 30 minutes into a history class in front of at least 15 other students.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Bob Boyce said the suspect had been fighting with the two victims since school started back two weeks ago.

'There were arguments going on for two weeks into the school year. It escalated today after some back and forth within the classroom,' Boyce said.

The suspect allegedly walked out of the room after the stabbing and surrendered the knife to a counselor.

Police said he then walked into the assistant principal's office, sat down and waited while 911 was called.

There are two schools within the one building - the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation, which is a high school and middle school combined. It also has Public School 67, which is an elementary school.

A Bronx student stabbed a classmate to death with a switchblade and seriously injured another in front of more than a dozen classmates inside their high school Wednesday morning — and cops are investigating if bullying was a motive, sources said.
Investigators believe Abel Cedeno, 18, plunged the tool into a Matthew McCree, 15, and Ariane LaBoy, 16, around 10:50 a.m. on the fifth floor of the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation on Mohegan Avenue in East Tremont, sources said.

Matthew McCree was fatally stabbed by a classmate.

One of the victims was throwing pens across the room in the middle of a third-period U.S. history class when Cedeno was hit, according to witness Jomarlyn Colon, 16, who was in the classroom at the time.

Cedeno demanded to know who did it, and when the McCree stepped forward to tell him it was an accident, Cedeno pulled a knife out of his front pocket, she said. It was a three-inch switchblade, Police Chief Robert Boyce said during a press conference later in the day.

McCree moved in to strike Cedeno, and Cedeno plunged the blade into the young man’s chest, Colon said.

Then LaBoy confronted the crazed classmate, and Cedeno stabbed him in the chest too, according to Colon.

“He went crazy,” Colon said.

Students tried to render aid to their bloodied classmates as the teacher tried to restrain Cedeno, she said.

“We were just holding Matthew,” she said. “When Ariane got stabbed they were holding towels on him. All the kids were crying. Mr. Kennedy tried to hold Abel but he broke free. They didn’t hold him tight enough.”

Another pupil in a nearby classroom recalled the ensuing fear and confusion.

“We heard screaming from the hallway,” said 10th grader Steven Nunez, who was in a classroom down the hall. “The teacher opened the door and people were screaming and running down the hall. Someone came in and said someone got stabbed and there’s blood in the hallway. The teacher locked the door and we were on hard lock-down for almost an hour.”

After the melee, Cedeno walked out into the hallway, where he handed the knife to a school counselor — then calmly strolled into an assistant principal’s office and sat in a chair while police were called, Boyce said.

McCree was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Barnabas hospital, and LaBoy is there in critical but stable condition, officials said.

Cedeno was arrested and is being held at the 48th Precinct, where he told cops that an ongoing beef with his victims made him snap, according to Boyce.

“They were going back and forth for about two weeks — since school started,” he said. “It escalated today after some back and forth in the classroom.”

Mayor de Blasio pledged Wednesday to tighten security at the school, which does not have scanners, and implement scanning tomorrow.

“My heart goes out to the families,” de Blasio said during a press conference at the stationhouse. “Every parent every morning worries about the safety of their child.”

The school serves sixth through 12th grades and is co-located with elementary school PS 67. It’s also a low performer, and kids have told the city they do not feel safe there.

Just 5 percent of pupils there are proficient in math and 13 percent in English, according to last year’s state exam results. And less than half of students polled at the school last year — 47 percent — said they felt safe on campus, well below the city average.

OK I'm gonna ask because nobody else has. How is this 18-year-old boy in the same class of these 15-year-old and 16-year-old kids?

CAT, you said it perfectly!!! His kid is a great kid around him) but not perfect!!! He( the stepfather) was not there, he DO NOT know what went on. I wholeheartedly, agree with you when you said, this situation is sad on All levels. Things HAVE to change. Furthermore, if only 3% of these children are passing reading and math, this school should have been closed down a long time ago. Obviously, these kids ARE doing other things beside learning.....SAD, VERY SAD SITUATION.

Sad on all three parts! The teasing (not everything is bullying) and the knife being brought to school. The fact that the assailant brought the knife to school shows that at he didn't snap he was planning on using the knife at some point. When he asked the question "who did it?", that gave him reason to use it. He knew someone was going to step to him.
What type of teacher allows this behavior to go on in class the way it did? He/she should have tossed somebody out, which would have been the one throwing the pencil. I don't believe the teacher didn't recognize that there was an issue between those students. A call home to parents, a meeting, SOMETHING should have been done to alleviate or change the situation.
And it's is so true that when children are away from parental guidance, they are sometimes a whole different person(s). But parents are so sure that "My little angle would NEVER do this or that!"' BS!!! I raised three and I got a call one day and heard one of mine cursing like a sailor or better which I thought would NEVER happen. My children were great but not perfect. Metal detectors are not going to solve the problem in schools or out, better parenting and school supervision in all areas will.

Listen there is always I repeat always going to be bullying in school someone is always going to pick on who they think is weak to make a name for themselves but the thing is fear will make you fight or run and this time the. Kid wasn't running anymore now the parents are going to say not my child his is good and that's how you feel about him but you don't know what your kid does in school when your not there and how does the stepfather know he like gay ppl was he touching him... I mean really why would two 15year old kids think it would be a good idea to pick on a18year old...because they did it better and they thought it was cute for the girls and now one is dead and one is fighting for his life... an the other is going to Jail so sad 3 life's ruined cus getting a education was secondary

Wow, so sad three families will never be the same again. And why because parents aren't involved in their children lives like the should of been.We as parents have to do more,or try.Did anyone know this poor child was being bullied?Did he try to speak to someone and try to get help? What about these bullies?Did anyone bring their behavior to the attention of staff or their damn parents? Whats going on at home that these damn kids need to bully each other...Why are ppl blaming De blasio for not having metal detector?First of all they shouldn't be needed in damn school..period..School is suppose to be a so called safe haven..Well it used to be..This new generation is terrible.Their rude, disrespectful, have no home training. We see it all the time and hear about their foolishness on the news so frequently, its disgusting. What happened to just fighting a fair one and shaking hands when done no matter if you lost or won..That should be the new"challenge"..The B.O.E knows this school has damn issues and they chose to do nothing about it..The system is made for us to damn fail. This is way we must educate our own and take care of our own.Believe me if the majority these kids were a couple of shades lighter.Problems would of been solved long time ago...BLACK LUV....Blessings
