A Pathmark grocery store in Old Bridge, N.J., is seen after a deadly shooting there Aug. 31, 2012. (WCBS-TV)
An early morning shooting left at least three people dead, including the gunman, at a New Jersey supermarket Friday, CBS New York station WCBS-TV reports.
Police said they started receiving 911 calls around 4 a.m. about shots fired inside a Pathmark supermarket in Old Bridge, CBS station WINS-AM reports. According to store employees, a gunman walked in with a shotgun and started shooting. Two employees were shot and killed before the suspect turned the gun on himself, witnesses said.
The store was scheduled to open at 6 a.m. Employees said there were about a dozen workers inside the store when the shooting happened. They said the store opens early to employees on Fridays so workers can do price changes, WINS-AM reports.
Two front windows of the store were broken out and two police cars were pulled up near the entrance. Employees said the gunman pumped the weapon toward the ceiling and sprayed the store with gunfire, WINS-AM reports.
The store and its parking lot were closed Friday. Pathmark officials had no immediate comment on the shooting.
Some of the supermarket's employees were brought to a nearby T.G.I. Friday's restaurant to talk with police, WCBS-AM reports.
Police at the scene were keeping onlookers well away from the store. A number of vehicles were in the parking lot outside the supermarket, along with police vehicles.
Old Bridge is a bedroom suburb of about 65,000 about 25 miles from Manhattan but just across the Raritan Bay from Staten Island.
New Jersey Transit closed its nearby park-and-ride lot and told riders that they could park in other park-and-ride lots or could ride the North Jersey Coast rail line.
