Mikal Smith, the son of Illinois and former NFL head coach Lovie Smith, was arrested in Arizona this week on sex-trafficking charges.
Mikal has been indicted following an investigation accusing him and Aprel Mae Rasmussen of running a prostitution ring from December 2018 and September 2019.
Smith reportedly used surveillance and threats to keep one victim under his control, according to ABC 15.
Mikal has been indicted on charges of conspiracy, illegally conducting an enterprise, money laundering in the first degree, pandering, receiving earnings of a prostitute, sex trafficking, and threatening or intimidating, the report states.
Rasmussen faces charges of conspiracy, illegally conducting an enterprise, money laundering in the first degree, and pandering.
Mikal is a former assistant head coach on his father’s staffs with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers..
Lovie coached the Bears from 2004-2012 and the Buccaneers in 2014 and 2015. Since 2016, he has served as head coach for the Fighting Illini.
Mikal played defensive back for the Arizona Wildcats in 1996.
