Puerto Rico's embattled Governor Ricardo Rosselló resigned Wednesday evening, caving into pressure following 12 consecutive days of riotous protests on the island.

Rosselló announced his departure in a video published on Facebook Live Wednesday evening where he touted his successes in office and asked forgiveness from the people saying 'apologizing is not enough'.

Rosselló's name was shrouded in scandal after 900 pages of texts between the Governor and his top aides were leaked and published by Puerto Rico’s Center for Investigative Journalism and revealed homophobic and misogynistic messages, corruption, and mocked Hurricane Maria victims.

'What I wish most is peace and progress for my people,' he said in his resignation statement.
