Principal slammed for demanding pictures of prom dresses before purchase - Do you agree with her?

Dr. Kim Pendleton insisted she had gotten complaints about what some of the girls wore to dances but a backlash was quick

A Louisiana high school principal is under fire after she sent a text message mandating all female students attending prom send her photos of themselves in their desired outfits for her pre-approval.

According to NBC News, this week, students attending Southwood High School in Shreveport received the hotly debated message from Principal Dr. Kim Pendleton. It instructed their daughters – and even female dates of their sons who don’t attend the school – to run their prom dress choices by her before purchase.

“This message is for any female attending Southwood’s prom. Boys, this also applies to your off-campus dates. As you begin shopping for your attire, please make sure you do not purchase any clothes that are sheer or revealing in any manner,” Pendleton wrote in the message.

“Also, make sure we not see excess cleavage or skin,” she continued. “Prior to purchasing an outfit, I will need you to send me a picture of you in the outfit with your name and grade. Once I approve the outfit, you may purchase it. The approved outfit is the only one you will be allowed to wear to prom.”

In a statement sent to NBC News, Pendleton, who took over as principal at Southwood High School in December, explained her controversial decision to send the mass text. She said it was directly informed by feedback from faculty and parents who were concerned about inappropriate attire at previous school functions.

She also addressed those who found it problematic that she only singled out female prom attendees. None of the complaints she received was about male attire.

To her point, photos from the 2019 prom posted on the school’s official website show an assortment of dresses with plunging necklines and high slits, strapless gowns, sheer tops, and midriff-baring two-piece ensembles.

The principal declared that not only have students only sent her respectful submissions thus far, some parents reached out to her to say they were “proud of the school for taking a stand to ensure prom is an encouraging, wholesome event.”

Southwood will host its annual senior prom in April but students will no longer need dress approval. KTAL reported Friday that Pendleton’s directive was overruled.

“It is no longer a requirement for students to have preapproval for their formal dress prior to prom. Any student and parent who may have doubts are welcome to send in their photo or show the dress in person,” the Caddo Parish Public Schools said in a statement.

Caddo Parrish public schools overruled the Principal's directive, so that implies that their Parrish people don't want the "smoke "!! What are they shying away from, dress code standards or lawsuit liability ?

I don’t approve, because you cannot argue taste. The student and parent should be given a set of guidelines to follow.

I like the idea and applaud it as supervised, supervision. Even tho these girls  might go "left" after the prominent event, it sets the stage for a respectful. ...."show-ing"?

This idea would show what their guardians are or are not thinking.

"Big-BUTT"; The idea is too heavily, reliant on the trust of the Principal (woman). Not sure about the male Principals gaining my trust. At. All. Why should I trust this woman like she is incapable of causing a deceitful act with the pictures or the decisions?  Can't call it.

That principal, is correct nowadays, women, young girls are dressing too slutty. They want to take pics of them in a sexy dress to post it online. Some parents go along with it. I give the principal respect on this, students who do not like this should not attend the prim, stay home, as for coming at boys, boys are not wearing sexy outfits.

Unfortunately, it has come down to this because of those disgusting parents. Us parents won’t have no issues w this because we would never allow our teens to walk out of our house dressing the way these girls dress these days. I approve this!!

When something hits home and hurts, usually that's the person who has the most ignorant thing to say, if it's not you, you shouldn't mine sending a photo of your well dressed beautiful child. He'll I'll send you one of mine and they don't even attend the school.

When you have niggers raising their kids without class, they dont know how to dress for church, a wedding, funeral to a BBq of course she is right, but for the rest of us who prepares our kids for this world we dont need no help, you have a grown ass son or daughter who cant tell the job interview to hanging out with their friends, if you are one of those who have not make it to your kid parents teachers meeting or career day with a suit she is talking to you, the rest of us don't meed no help we know what a prom is

I don't agree with her approach. She should have sent and given each student and parent a written notice of expected protocols for attire and the young men's dates if off-campus. And invite any student and parent to send pictures for prior approval before prom. With the notice, if the outfits do not fit protocols at the time of the prom they would be turned away at the doors. So it would be in their (student) best interest to seek approval from the principal before prom. That way there would be no embarrassments at the time of the prom.
