A female Louisiana police officer has died after being shot while on her way to work on Wednesday.
The officer, named by the Shreveport Times as Chateri Payne, was about to start her shift when the shooting took place in the town of Shrevport, Louisiana at around 8.20pm on Wednesday.
Sources said Payne was shot a total of four times, including once in the head, and was rushed to hospital soon after the incident.
A total of 54 first responder units were said to have rushed to the scene to try and assist, but she was later pronounced dead in hospital.
Police said Thursday they had detained a suspect for questioning, although the motives behind the attack remain unclear.
A spokesperson for the Shreveport Police Department refused to confirm officially that Payne was the victim.
But posts paying tribute to Payne were widely circulated on Facebook along with messages of condolence.

'We have lost one of our own. She was young, and she was beautiful.
'She was proving herself to be a capable professional, dedicated to serving the Citizens of Shreveport.'
