Over 80 prisoners released in Jamaica thanks to Food for the Poor

Over 80 prisoners have been released from custody and returned to their families as part of the Easter season Prison Ministry Program by charity group Food for the Poor.

Twice a year, during Christmas and Easter, the Food for the Poor Prison Ministry Program pays the fines of inmates who committed minor offenses.

This Easter, Food for the Poor secured the release of 81 prisoners in Guyana, Haiti, Honduras and Jamaica.

In Jamaica, 37 inmates were released from the St. Catherine, Tower Street and Tamarind Farm Adult Correctional Centres, on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

Prior to their release, the inmates were fed, given tools, a small stipend and groceries to take home to their families.

Food for the Poor says prison authorities have found the Prison Ministry Program to be so successful, they have implemented a similar program themselves.

Some prisons now offer inmates jobs in the prison where they are held so that they can earn money to pay off their fines.

Minor offenses like what? If you are incarcerated, you should stay incarcerated until you have done your time? Somebody help me think this one through.
