'I’m able to function because of the peace of knowing my loved ones are in a better place': NFL star Adrian Peterson defends his decision to play after son, 2, is killed
Joseph Patterson is back in jail, a place he will likely become very familiar with over the next few years.
The 28-year old was initially arrested in Sioux Falls, South Dakota last October in connection with the death of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson's 2-year old son, Tyrese Ruffin.
Tyrese Ruffin
Patterson, who was dating Ruffin's mother, was was babysitting the child at the time he was fatally injured. Patterson called 911 to report the boy was choking. Doctors at the hospital determined that the injuries were not accidental.
Patterson was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated assault on an infant. His bail was set at $750,000.
He bonded out of jail, but was arrested again on Wednesday, June 25. This time he's accused of abducting Ruffin's mother and "attempting to induce serious bodily harm by applying pressure on her throat and neck, or by blocking her nose or mouth", according to KSFY. He's also charged with causing "property damage in the amount of $400 or less and one count of interference with emergency communication for interrupting another person's use of a communication device while seeking emergency aid."
He's currently being held at Minnehaha County Jail on $1 million cash bond. His trial for the murder of Tyrese Ruffin begins in October.

Adrian Peterson took the field with his Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, just two days after the tragic death of his two-year-old son.
There can't be many people whom faced with the death of their child would still consider playing in a national football game just days after the tragedy.
Yet, for Adrian Peterson, he wouldn't have had it any other way.
'I’m still hurt and feel the pain of life, but I’m able to function because of the peace and joy of knowing my loved ones are in a much better place,' he says.
On Friday, Peterson's two-year-old son was killed in an alleged case of child abuse in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Support: Minnesota Vikings fans hold a sign supporting Vikings running back Adrian Peterson during the second half of an NFL football game in Minneapolis
The alleged assailant is in jail, and Peterson rushed to the hospital Thursday to see the child before vowing to play against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
'I was set on it. I just look at things and I don't ask people to understand my mindset and how I think. Anything bad, I try to take good from it. That's the way I approach life in all situations. I never thought about not playing. It was all about just going out there and praying that I have the strength to get through and help my team. That was my focus.'
Fans held signs that read 'Stay Strong 28' and 'Prayers for Adrian,' and several teammates offered hugs and well wishes before the game.
'I just prayed and asked God to give me the strength just to get through the game, just play and focus,' Peterson said. 'And for the most part, I did.'
He took the field for Sunday’s match up against the Carolina Panthers two hours before game time, to a roar from fans who had showed up early just to greet him.
Peterson declined to discuss the relationship he had with the boy, who lived with his mother in Sioux Falls.
He only learned recently that he had a son by a woman with whom he’d had a brief affair.
He’d not yet met the boy when he learned Thursday the child was in the hospital and on life support
The mother's boyfriend, Joseph Patterson, is charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said he thought his star running back handled himself well during the trying circumstances.
'It's a difficult, difficult situation and there are a lot of people trying to support him within in the organization, his teammates as well,' Frazier said.
Panthers safety Mike Mitchell, who had two interceptions and a sack, sought out Peterson during the game to offer some words of encouragement.
Mitchell said he mentioned to the deeply religious Peterson the Bible verse Jeremiah 29:11 about God providing hope for the future.
'I told him that to keep that in his heart as he continues to take this challenge going forward,' Mitchell said.
Peterson said he is leaning on his teammates and family to help him through, and he will continue to look to the football field as a shelter, as he has throughout his life during the toughest of times.
'In life situations, and in football, you've got to continue to believe,' Peterson said. 'We've got to get everyone with that same mindset, to believe no matter what the circumstances.'
Peterson also pointed out that he played following the death of a brother several years ago.

Peterson has had tragedy peppered throughout his life. When he was seven, he saw his older brother die in a bike accident after being hit by a drunken driver.
For Peterson's teenage years, his father was in prison. He grew up poor in east Texas. Shortly before the Minnesota Vikings drafted him in 2007, a half-brother, was shot and killed.
Long before Peterson began running through the NFL record book, he learned to turn tragedy into fuel for an exceptional career. Football has always been his escape, and now he's dealing with more off-the-field strife.
One of Peterson's sons, a victim of alleged child abuse, died on Friday of severe head injuries suffered in the attack.
The man charged in the case, Joseph Patterson, was home alone with the two-year-old boy on Wednesday and called 911 to report he was choking, according to police. Patterson was the boyfriend of the child's mother.
Peterson missed practice on Thursday to be in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where the boy lived with his mother and Patterson. He returned to the Vikings on Friday.

Working through the pain: Oftentimes athletes use work as a cathartic way to move through tragedy and will often dedicate their performance to those that they lost
'Things that I go through, I've said a thousand times, it helps me play this game to a different level,'he said after practice, about an hour after the child's death. 'I'm able to kind of release a lot of my stress through this sport, so that's what I plan on doing.'

'Praying for you and your family. May God give you the strength,' tweeted New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck, whose team plays the Vikings on October 21.
The Vikings play Carolina on Sunday, and Peterson promised to participate.
'I'll be ready to roll, focused,' he said.
That's no surprise to anyone who's known him.
'The death of his brother at that young age drove him to want to be the very best that he could be,' said Steve Eudey, who was Peterson's youth football coach and a mentor to him growing up.
'Because in his opinion, Brian was always better than he was and he felt he had to live up to those expectations.'

Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, the mother's boyfriend, was charged on Friday with aggravated assault and aggravated assault on an infant.
The two-year-old boy, named locally as Ty, passed away on Friday at a South Dakota hospital after being admitted on Wednesday. The football star's father Nelson confirmed that the boy who died was his grandson.
Patterson appeared in court on Friday to be arraigned on the felony charges. Additional charges may be added now that the child has died, South Dakota State’s Attorney's office said.

Requests for privacy: NFL star Adrian Peterson, pictured at a press conference today, acknowledged that he was dealing with a 'private matter' but said little else. It is believed that his 'secret' son died today after being beaten by the boyfriend of the child's mother
The little boy was brutally beaten on Wednesday while in Patterson’s home at Platinum Valley Apartments, Sioux Falls where he had recently moved with his mother. Patterson was the sole caregiver at the time.
Initially, police were told that the child had choked on candy. Only later did it emerge that his brain injuries were the result of being violently shaken.
The arrest was made after police found the little boy with injuries 'consistent with abuse'.
Patterson is being held in Minnehaha County Jail, South Dakota on $750,000 cash bond.
He is scheduled to appear in court on October 23 but a grand jury indictment is expected before then.
South Dakota State’s Attorney Thomas Wollman filed motions on Friday ordering Patterson to serve two year-long sentences that had been suspended on prior domestic assault charges.
Patterson had pleaded guilty in 2012 to simple assault in an incident involving an ex-girlfriend and her three-year-old son.
The woman requested a protection order saying that Patterson had spanked her little boy so hard that she had to ice the welts on his buttocks, according to the Argus.
She also said that he choked and punched her, threatened her with a knife and held her in the bedroom against her will, according to records.
She asked for the protection orders prior to the birth of the son she has with Patterson.
As part of his prior charges, Patterson was ordered to undergo family violence training and to stay away from the woman until completing it.
A different woman requested a protection order against Patterson in 2004 in Jackson County.

One woman told the Argus Leader that Ty 'was a spunky boy full of life, who was ''always running, jumping and into everything... but whose big brown eyes made it hard to be mad at him'.
Another attendee, Vanja Srdic, 27, described the two-year-old as 'very happy, very strong-willed, so much potential, a go-getter little boy. His mom was his world'.
Following the news of his son's death, NFL star Peterson tweeted: 'Thank you to my family, my fans and fans of other teams for their support.
'The NFL is a fraternity of brothers and I am thankful for the tweets, phone calls and text messages from my fellow players.
Peterson added: 'God Bless everyone and thank u so much.'

Peterson knew that he was the father of the child before he was tragically killed.
In a phone interview with the Pioneer Press, Nelson Peterson said the injured boy is not Adrian Jr., but is his grandson.

Comment
I had a love one pass on, and I didn't grieve until a month later. I suddenly felt sad and started crying because it hit me that they were gone(physically). Lots of pro players played during trying times, didn't Michael Jordan continue to play after his dad was murdered?
Individually,we grief differently, leave the man alone!
This is exactly how I deal with death and bad news,it doesn't stop me from functioning...what doesn't kill you, make you stronger!
As for the mother...nevermind!
well I can see why he still was able to play in the game and that's bc its not like he really knew the little dude so he wasn't emotional connectedit was a tradegy no doubt but its not like he was in the kids life
I won't judge this man because I don't know what went on with him and the mother.....but I send my condolences to him and his family. Women have got to stop leaving their kids with men that are abusive...if he previously did this to your child, why would you still be with him and leave your son with him? The mother should be charged as well and the judge who let him go...only to do it again and succeed in killing the child....SMH
that's how he deal
That dirty muthaFu__a's cousin just delivered chineses Food to my apartment last night!!!!!!!
jah know son.... as a man ... when your having babaies with these hoes... you have to be there...cause these b****** aint s***..... if your not there anything will and can happen to your child cause when its all said and done...women cant protect s***.... since theyre always the victim.....so as a man you have to be there ....constantly or be prepared for all kinds of dumb s*** to happen....
