News: Here Are the Requirements For O.J. Simpson To Be Released From Prison

O.J. Simpson could be released on parole this summer
O.J. Simpson has spent the past eight years in prison, but freedom could be on the horizon for the 69-year-old NFL legend.

O.J. Simpson could be provisionally released from prison soon.

Sports Illustrated reports that the legendary NFL running back who was infamously tried for the murder of his ex-wife in the early 1990s is up for parole "as early as this summer." Simpson was acquitted of that crime and is currently serving a sentence for an armed robbery of Las Vegas memorabilia collectors in 2007.

Simpson, now 69 years old, has spent the last eight years in prison.

The authors of the story, Michael McCann and Jon Wertheim, argue that Simpson will be released in 2017. Here is their explanation of hos the decision is made by the Nevada parole board:

The decision to grant parole is, by definition, discretionary. But it is a decision that Thomas Patton, a former chairman of the parole board in Nevada, stresses is conducted through a “very comprehensive review,” weighing 11 largely objective factors. Between -1 and +2 points are allocated for each criterion. Inmates exceeding five points are classified as a “medium” or “high” risk and are unlikely to be granted parole. Score fewer than five points, and odds swing the other way. In 2013, Simpson scored three points, falling into the “low risk” category. He seems likely to do well again in 2017.

Here are the 11 factors, per Sports Illustrated:

Age at the time of first arrest
Prior probation or parole revocation
Employment history immediately before arrest
Offense leading to current or prior convictions
History of drug or alcohol abuse
Current age
Active gang membership
Completed education, vocational or treatment program during prison term
Disciplinary write-ups
Custody level
The authors score Simpson between a 0 and a 2, making him a "low risk" inmate yet again. We'll find out whether that prediction is accurate and whether that score is strong enough to earn him his release when he next applies for parole.

Simpson, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, played 11 seasons with the Buffalo Bills (1969-1977) and San Francisco 49ers (1978-1979). He rushed for over 11,000 yards and 61 touchdowns during his illustrious NFL career, earning five consecutive first-team All-Pro bids from 1972-1976.

OJ was over prosecuted for the Nevada incident. Someone else would never have gotten jail time. He was paying for his arrogance after the Brown/Goldman murder that he was acquited for.
