The mother of the young woman who organized the McKinney pool party at Craig Ranch that ended with police using excessive force against teenagers and revealed racial fault lines within the neighborhood is looking at being evicted from the subdivision. LaShauna Burks lives in a $237,000 home in the Craig Ranch North subdivision with her husband and children, and she reports that she is hoping to catch up on her back rent and avoid eviction before the end of the month.
According to court records, homeowner Mary Huang reports that Burks has not paid her July rent, amounting to $1,620. Burks, who works at a hospital, reports that she missed some days of work due to her children being threatened by people calling her home and leaving online messages. Burks says she was afraid to leave her children alone, and this made her miss days of work.
Burks reports that she attempted to pay the delinquent amount in installments, but Huang refused to allow her to make partial payments. If she is able to pay the delinquent amount in full before an August court date, the case will be dismissed. Burks says that Rebecca Lin, Huang’s real estate agent, filed the court documents because she felt she needed the protection.
Emmanuel Obi is a Dallas attorney representing Burks’ daughter Tatyana Rhodes for her involvement in the pool party incident. Although Obi does not represent Burks in the eviction case, he is looking into whether or not the eviction is retaliatory.
The pool party incident occurred in June, and video of the incident went viral. Police responded to a call about a disturbance, and video shows a white officer pinning a Black teen girl on the ground and also pulling his gun on two other teenagers. The incident is being investigated by the Texas Rangers to determine if there was excessive use of force or any civil rights violations. The pool party reportedly got out of hand after two white women hurled racial slurs at the teenage guests.
