Men Beaten During West Indian Day Parade Get Payout

Three men beaten by riot cops during 2005's West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn will receive $440,000between them. O'Neil Bonner, Andre Essor and Sylvester Craig were in the vicinity of Church Avenue in the early hours of September 5, 2005 when NYPD officers showed up after reports of gunfire in the area. The lawsuit charged that they began swinging their batons at bystanders, and injured the three men.

Bonner will get $90,000 for a fractured cheekbone, Essor $175,000 for a broken elbow and Craig $175,000 for a torn knee ligament he said happened when he was pinned against a storefront by a police horse and beaten. The men apparently couldn't identify the cops responsible for their injuries because their faces were obscured by riot gear. Though the city will pay the men, city Law Department chief Fay Leoussis says, "The city admitted no wrongdoing whatsoever in this case."

It seems as though everyone is missing the real issue in the story above. The comments make it sound as though the three men were the ones who were the cause of the incident with the gunfire which caused the police men to come and beat them up. It clearly states that the police showed up because of reported gunfire in the area and started swinging and beating bystanders. If you're minding your own business at a carnival and trying to have a little fun, and out of nowhere police come and s*** starting popping off and you're like what the F--K is going on? Next thing you know you are being beaten. You mind frame is of freight and shock and hope that they don't kill you. you wont have time to write down or remember badge number. Its not like the cops are standing still, they are in movement and on horses.

The police men are also afraid of all those people out there on eastern parkway when something happens. They dont know who's who and all they're thinking about is its going to be me or them so they treat each one like the bad guy. Yes they should have gotten paid. It could have been anyone of us out on that parkway. I stop going about 4 years ago, it was just too crowded for my liking and I don't live in New York.

Your tax dollars has supported far worse than this. Where was your OUTCRY for those things.

It's a shame that we only see the police being at fault here! We should be talking about the savages that initiated the incident with gun fire. These thugs are taking the fun out of everything thing we do on a daily basis. They should also be held responsible for being in possession of these illegal guns at the celebration.

There should have a law or laws against police doing injustice to civilian. but then they can not run forever, the Father is watching, and the big judgment day is fast approaching..

You don't have to admit a thing, the law already said you are guilty.
