Mary J. Blige and Sean “Diddy” Combs recently had a candid conversation about the state of R&B music, with the hip-hop mogul asking on social media: “Who killed R&B?

“You can’t kill something that’s in our DNA,” said Blige, as reported by Hot New Hip Hop. “It’s gonna keep transitioning from generation to generation to generation to generation. They was trying to kill it.”

She continued, “Before I say what I’m gonna say, let me just say this: I wanna thank all the radio stations around the country that are playing R&B music and sincerely support it. But, you know, a lot of the radio stations killed it, for the same thing that Tank was saying. They ain’t gon’ jump on the bandwagon of whatever the hottest things is—but, let me just say this. We have to keep ourselves alive as R&B singers.”

Blige went on to name herself and music icons such as Chaka Khan, Etta James, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Jazmine Sullivan, and SWV.

“They wanna call it ‘Popular Music’ with Adele and Justin Timberlake get ahold to it, so now it’s ‘Popular Music.’ But it’s been popular music! We’ve been had it,” she added.

Hear more from Blige and Diddy about the current state of R&B music via the Instagram video below.

In related news, we reported previously that Blige recently reflected on her Super Bowl halftime show performance and the 30th anniversary of her debut album, “What’s the 411.”

In a new interview with Apple Music 1’s Nadeska, the legendary Queen of Hip-Hop Soul said she is not taking any of it for granted and that she is super proud of herself.

“I’m super proud of myself and I’ve never thought I’d ever be able to say that in my lifetime,” said the “Be Without You” in the interview.

At the Super Bowl halftime show, the singer performed “Family Affair,” a hit that ranks No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100. She also performed “No More Drama.” Her performance set the stage for the debut of “Good Morning Gorgeous,” which is her 14th studio album.

“I don’t even have the words to explain how full and how huge of an accomplishment that was. I just felt so strong. And I felt like, first of all, grateful to have been asked, but I definitely felt like I earned that moment,” Blige stated. “So when it was my turn, I just showed the world who I was. If you’d never seen me or you never met me or you never went to any of my shows, you know exactly who I am after the Super Bowl. I just couldn’t wait to hit the Mary bopping. I just couldn’t wait to just be myself and do what I do in front of that audience. That was the world, that was a big deal. I was so grateful.”

Steveon Williams thank you for your comment, that is what I am trying to tell those idiots who sits in the basement listening to wlbs all day who won't play any new music but willing to play those white Artists or the same tired song over and over.

When you go to those beach parties in Miami Beach and California or Vegas all they play are pop Artists, look who are put there supporting them, every obe including blacks, so those Artists make money before the record even hit radio, by the time they go on your they don't even have to release anything, but yet the fans can't wait for their retur. Even if the song is wack they still sale, the problem with black fans theu don't appreciate their own and always willing to chase others, if you play it its either too old or played out or not good enough unless you're talking about nonsense , but how many of those pop Artists are making songs about p****, guns and money, listen to what they are singing about and making millions, and can perform anywhere.

The black community is cursed in evry way they are losing even in their own creativity. Rock and roll was a black creation but look what happened, this is truly sad when you have people who sits back making excuses for their own failure instead of getting together to find a solution and fix the problem. No wonder negros are always begging for opportunity, so sad.

Pop music is what's popular at any given time.  Some of it survives beyond the year it's released.  Some artists are able to keep up with the times and after some tours and some time, their music makes enough of an impact to carry on.  The problem with the industry is they're out for the money and couldn't care less about the artist or the quality of their work.  The closest thing I can find to a community radio station these days are the HBCU stations on Sirius XM and a few others.

Now, don't get it twisted.  There are quite a few old and new R&B artists out there doing their thing.  Many of whom get very little to no radio play.  You'll find them on the streaming services though.  That's where I've been finding most of what I listen to.  If you tap the radio button on any of your favorites, you'll surely get something new that you've never heard before.

When you see your favorites on tour...  Especially the ones you don't hear on the radio anymore, try to support.  Try to see them live.  If you haven't been to a live show, then you definitely need to go to one.  Yeah, some of them are kinda expensive, but many aren't.  I remember the first time I went to see Judith Hill live...  Her tour band includes her father on bass and her mother on keys (moms ain't no joke).  Slim did her thang on stage.  A vocalist who tops most of what you're probably listening to these days.

You just need to find it for yourself and support when you can.

vaughn Bigger mitchell, learn how to have a brain of your own, observe and analyze what is going on instead of jumping around like the Porch Monkey that you are and do what every one is telling you to do without your own research.

I don't care about what Mary And Tank is telling you, I am speaking on what I have been observing and what I have been pointing out. When you play an R&B song the little negros are quick to say that it's old, just because they don't have home when culture surrounding and no one to teach them any thing, on the other hand the white kids are listening to Bob Dylan old songs like they are new, majority of the White Artists even Justin Timberlake who by the way the Negros support for ripping R&B are selling their catalogues to the record companies while they hold the rights to their music, how many of your black Artist ate selling any thing or own any rights to their works? Those whit companies own their rights dead or alive, how many radio stations are playing R&B if it's not in great demand like pop music, in the pop culture dj remix most of the songs and turn them to dance music, walk up to a club on Miami Beach what you think they are playing, when the last time your monkey ass went any where, who are supporting R&B or pop? Well the white fans, black fans and others support pop music, it's nobody's fault if you don't cherish your own, I have a voice to use when about what matters and I do that well, so like I always say transgender like you always get your information after so.ethong you read on here, if you had knowledge or sense of what has been going in the music business you would understand where my comment is coming from, but you too stuck on what ever any celebrity is telling you so you can't think of see things on your own. Now like I always say if you don't matter to me or any one else on here why address me when I won't even take the time to know your existence unless you're being the n***** f***** that you are, so keep being a porch monkey and stop riding my dick you slave n*****

Well if you listen to other artists speak on the subject, they all echo the same thing, the system is rigged.  Who controls the purse strings, call the shots.  I'm speaking of the guys that wear the small hats.  They're your managers, publicists, lawyers, promoters etc, etc, etc.  Most of the R&B stations are dead and gone.  They're the ones that make you or break you. It's been said that in the 60's black artist were trying to do their own thing.  Sam Cooke was one and James Brown.  They murdered Sam Cooke sending a message and guys like James Brown backed off.  Jimmy Hendrix was also murdered.  Janis Joplin, was devastated, and was freaking out to the point where they killed her also because she allegedly was gonna spill the beans.  They killed Michael Jackson, and Prince.  Mike and Prince owned their masters.  Look at what happened to R. Kelly when he started talking about his catalog which is worth billions, he's in jail.  We create, but we get no credit or the proper compensation.  It's a f*@ked up system that was never geared to pay us or acknowledge or talents.  Just look at this country in the 20's, 30's, & 40's when so many black singers couldn't make it here, but would go to places in Europe like France, and got proper recognition and were treated 50 times better than they were treated in Amerikka.  It's just sad the way the use us, copy our music, then discard us like toilet paper.  It will never change.

If someone read what Mary J , said instead of blaming the black community because he is a racist, white trash, she and R&B singer said some radio stations play R&B and some don't and Justin Timberlake, and Adele for rebranding it as popular music . Like she said no one can kill R&B, it's in our DNA. No where in this article did Mary,Tank, Diddy or any other artist blame the black community. Your always coming on here putting down black people, like you are one of us. Go f*** with that traitor in chief, wanna be king and dictator,go over to your right wing and patriot family. Damn racist idiot.

That is true, black people stands around and watch white artists steal their works, the black community do not support anything that is positive unless you're talking nonsense, the white fans and others support those white artists, some of them have one song playing and they are multi millionaires compare to black artists making hits after hits and still end up broke
