Man pleads guilty to fatal shooting during West Indian/American J’ouvert celebration

Trinidadian-born man charged in connection with Labour Day murder

A 28-year-old Brooklyn man has pleaded

guilty to first-degree manslaughter for fatally shooting another man during the 2014

J’ouvert celebration of the West Indian/American Day

carnival parade.

Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said Derek Goodings fired a

weapon into a crowd of people participating in the festival on September 1, 2014.

The district attorney said Goodings fired five times, striking Michael Sampson,

55, in the chest, killing him, and injuring another man. He also fired at an

unmarked police van, striking it.

The judge has indicated he will sentence the defendant in February to 24

years in prison and five years post-release supervision, Gonzalez said.

“This defendant senselessly fired into a crowd of revellers, taking a man’s life and marring what should have been a night of celebration. The festivities surrounding J’ouvert ought to be a joyful time for the community, and we will aggressively prosecute anyone who shoots or harms people at this annual event or anywhere else in Brooklyn,” Gonzalez said.

Over the years, police say the West Indian/American celebration has been marred by violence.

On September 14 last year, a reputed member of the Folk Nation gang pleaded not guilty to murdering the Jamaican-born legal aide to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo who was felled by a stray bullet during a wild shootout.

Kenny Bazile was the fourth suspect charged in the tragic killing of Carey Gabay, a Harvard-educated lawyer, who worked at the Empire State Development Corporation.

Bazile was nabbed earlier this month in California where he had fled by train the day after the shooting, said Assistant Brooklyn District Attorney Emily Dean.

Trinidadian Yvette Rennie, president of J’ouvert City International, told reporters that she believes “there was a younger generation who didn’t understand the culture.

“They came from the parties and thought it was a free-for-all,” she said.

Cuomo aide shot during J'Ouvert celebration dead

CAREY GABAY WAS AN INNOCENT BYSTANDER, POLICE SAID.

Nine months after the shooting death of an aide to New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo at last year’s pre-West Indian Day Parade event, J’Ouvert, a man who police say is from Trinidad has been charged with the murder.

Micah Alleyne, 23, was arraigned last Friday on charges of murder in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment in the September 7, 2015 shootout that killed 43-year-old Carey Gabay.

He confessed to firing a weapon at the parade event and was ordered held without bail.

Police say the shooting was gang related and Gabay, the son of Jamaican immigrants, was an innocent bystander who got caught in the crossfire. Prosecutors have indicated that more arrests are coming.

Prior to Alleyne’s arrest, police released several photos and a video of suspects. At least four other people are wanted for questioning in the fatal shooting.

“We will continue to press forward until we hold everyone responsible for his death accountable,” Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said in a statement.

In honor of Gabay, a street near his home in Clinton Hill was recently been renamed Carey Gabay Way.

Following Alleyne’s arrest, Governor Cuomo described Gabay as “an exemplary public servant who lost his life in a senseless tragedy”, and he commended the investigators and prosecutors for their “tireless efforts to ensure those responsible for Carey’s death are held fully accountable for their actions”.

First Deputy Counsel Carey Gabay was shot in the head when he was suddenly caught in the middle of a Brooklyn gunfight during a J’Ouvert celebration.

Witnesses at the scene described the suspect as a 19 to 20-year-old black male who was wearing a white T-shirt, black pants and a Jamaican flag around his neck.

An aide to Gov. Cuomo died Wednesday, nine days after he was hit in the head by a stray bullet during a J’Ouvert celebration, the man’s family said.

“He was removed from life support, we had to make that decision,” Carey Gabay’s shaken mother-in-law told the Daily News as the grief-stricken family left Kings County Hospital.

Gabay had been declared brain dead, the family said.

“There are difficult decisions we will face in the coming hours and days as our family struggles to process what this means for us,” his family said in a earlier Wednesday. “This is a nightmare that’s shaken our resolve and tested our faith.”

Gabay, the 43-year-old Harvard-educated son of Jamaican immigrants who was recently named first deputy counsel to the Empire State Development Corp., was attending a J’Ouvert celebration on Bedford Ave. in Crown Heights at 3:45 a.m. on Sept. 7. He ran for cover when gunfire erupted, but an errant bullet hit him in the head.

“Carey was the epitome of an outstanding public servant,” Cuomo said in a statement. “No one should have to experience the pain of losing someone they love to random gun violence.”

Detectives were closing in on a suspect Wednesday. “We do have some identifications and are going forward with that right now,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce.

Lawyer for Gov. Cuomo critically wounded during string of Brooklyn shootings, 1 fatal stabbing before West Indian Day Parade

Gunfire on Empire Blvd. and Bedford Ave. in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, early Monday interrupted the J'Ouvert celebration, which acts as a prequel to the day's West Indian Day Parade.

A 21-year-old gunman was arrested Monday in the shooting of a 20-year-old man in Brooklyn during the J'Ouvert celebration, cops said.

David Pugh faces charges of assault, weapons possession, reckless endangerment, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest after he opened fire at 4:25 a.m. on Empire Blvd. and Bedford Ave. in Crown Heights, police said.

The overnight J’Ouvert celebration is a roving rowdy mix of drums and drink that precedes the West Indian Day Parade but is a separate event.

Victim Jaquan Johnson was hit once in the torso but was expected to survive, cops said.

The arrest was the only one so far in a string of five attacks that left two other men shot and two stabbed by Monday night.

Police were still hunting for as many as three gunmen after Cuomo administration lawyer Carey Gabay, 43, was hit in their crossfire. Gabay was critically wounded at 4:19 a.m. at Sullivan Pl. and Bedford Ave. in Crown Heights.

A gunman shot a 39-year-old man at Martense St. and Nostrand Ave. in Prospect Lefferts Gardens in an unrelated incident at 5:30 a.m., cops said. Another attacker stabbed a 24-year-old man at Eastern Pkwy. and Plaza St. East in Prospect Heights at 4 a.m.

Around 3:20 p.m., two men, who witnesses said were wearing the Barbadian colors blue and gold, came to blows at Rochester Ave. and Eastern Pkwy. in Crown Heights, near the parade route.

A 33-year-old man was stabbed once in the abdomen during the fight and was rushed to Kings County Hospital in serious but stable condition, police said. His assailant fled.

A lawyer for Gov. Cuomo was shot and critically wounded in the hours just before the parade.

A lawyer who works for Gov. Cuomo was critically wounded by a "random bullet" during a spate of shootings in Brooklyn Monday morning, just hours before the West Indian Day Parade was set to begin, Cuomo said.

First Deputy Counsel Carey Gabay, 43, was shot in the head on Bedford Ave. and Sullivan Pl. in Crown Heights about 3:40 a.m., police sources said.

"He could have gone to any Wall Street firm and made multiples of what he was making for the state," Cuomo said. "He worked for the state, 43 years old, married, his wife was pregnant with their first child."

A 24-year-old man was stabbed on Eastern Parkway by Grand Army Plaza during J'Ouvert on Monday morning.

Cuomo said Gabay was with his office for five years and "he's now struggling for his life and I'm going to go visit him in the hospital now, because a random bullet hit him in the head and we believe he's in critical condition."

"That, that my friends as we celebrate today, we have to commit ourselves to justice in partnership with the police and in partnership with one another, that the crime, the violence on those streets stop, because enough young people have died," Cuomo said, during a pre-parade breakfast before rushing off to visit the wounded father-to-be at Kings County Hospital. "Enough innocent people have died. And it has to stop and it has to stop now."

I'm glad they got the bastard. I'm just mad they keep tying this s*** to labour day and Jouvert. This did not take place at either one of these events. knock it off.

This was not the first time someone fired shots at this event and it won't be the last. The Labor Day Parade used to be a beautiful event, but now it has folks in the crowd who are on edge...they carry weapons to the event and cause trouble, and it gets worse when they drink.

each time those women decide to get pregnant without the guaranty of parenting from the men they are sleeping with consider another demon is born, poverty does not make people taking each others lives instead why not find a way to get out poverty, it does not cause those animal behaviors, low self esteem no self respect, so keep supporting those women, keep feeling sorry for them, keep hanging out with men you know who dont take care of their kids, and another waste will take birth in the community the choice is ours to go forward until then wait for another innocent life to be destroy, the end of the year is near and there will be blood in the community as the holiday seasons approaches

JOB 9:24 proves that the society ruling now over blacks is known as The Wicked. Job 9:24 says The earth is given into the hands of the wicked, if not where and who is he ? This also explains why we cant get no justice on anything.

We are the ones that must clean up our own filth, you got a billion and one black churches in America teaching lies and white supremacy about a white jesus and a white god and doing nothing but getting paid off. Nothing good ever came from a bunch of lies and respect for life and property starts in the home from childhood so the home is void of knowledge understanding and wisdom. No body cared to teach them God and Christ is black, so these cowardly negros become death angels running around with guns listening to bad music and fornicating everywhere to create more death angels. Our people justify the wicked society ruling over us and the righteousness (truth) and our black people the righteous are running around being wicked because these black leaders let the truth be taken out the community for the love of money and a pay off isaiah 5:23 and in the 25th vrs The real God who is black is ANGRY at our people and He will cause evil cowardly negros to start to get torn up in the streets!
