City of Chicago confirms it WILL sue Jussie Smollett for wasted $130k police investigation into fake hate attack: Nigerian brothers he accused also plan lawsuit

Embattled actor Jussie Smollett faces a $130,000 lawsuit from the City of Chicago - and more legal trouble from the brothers he hired to attack him - after he was convicted of staging his own assault in a botched career move.

The former Empire star dominated headlines in January 2019 after he claimed he was victimized in a racist, homophobic attack, but investigators soon determined his story was a hoax.

The Chicago Police Department came to the conclusion after more than two dozen cops spent weeks investigating the bogus story, logging 1,836 overtime hours in the process, a July 2019 legal filing said.Julian Assange has a stroke in Belmarsh prison: Fiancée blames extreme stress caused by US extradition battle , and other top stories from December 12, 2021.

The city was faced with a $130,106.15 overtime tab and has since confirmed that it will press ahead with its lawsuit against Smollett to reclaim the cash. Their chances of a win or settlement are now all but guaranteed in the wake of the star's conviction.

A lawsuit filed against Smollett's legal team by the Nigeran brothers Smollett hired to attack him also stands.

It city said it's going forward with the lawsuit following the 39-year-old actor's conviction last week on five counts of disorderly conduct.

'The City filed a civil lawsuit against Jussie Smollett to recover costs incurred by the Chicago Police Department investigating what the City believed to be Smollett's false police reports that he was a victim of a hate crime,' the statement said.

'While using a different standard of proof, the jury's finding of guilt convicting Jussie Smollett of criminal charges stemming from the incident confirms that the City was correct in bringing its civil lawsuit.'

Nigerian brothers paying Abimbola 'Abel' Osundairo and Olabinjo 'Ola' Osundairo admitted that Smollett paid them to stage the attack, which they claim he orchestrated.

However, they later sued Smollett's attorneys in April 2019, after the initial set of charges were dropped, claiming the case damaged their careers and reputations.

They claimed in the defamation lawsuit against lawyers Mark Geragos and Tina Glandian that they were maliciously portrayed as liars in the public.

Among the suggestions the lawyers made was that the brothers, who Smollett knew because he had enlisted them for personal training, might have been wearing white face when they attacked him on January 29.'

The brothers' lawsuit said Glandian also inferred that  Abel engaged in a sexual relationship with Smollett, and noted that homosexuality is illegal in the brothers' home country.

'Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Nigeria, which can result in 14 years of imprisonment,' the lawsuit said. 'If the accused is married, the punishment is death by stoning.

'Ms. Glandian’s globally broadcasted statements that Bola Osundairo is homosexual endangers him and the lives of his Nigerian family.'

A federal judge stayed their lawsuit until the criminal proceedings are completed for Smollett, who has not yet been sentenced.

The brothers were arrested following Smollett's purported attack, but never charged.

Brothers involved in Smollett attack arrested in February 2019

The brothers' legal team is expected to file an update to the court by February 2; their lawyers said in August that 'with regard to settlement, nothing has changed in the Plaintiffs’ position.'

Smollett has been shamed for still refusing to admit that he staged a hoax race attack yesterday after being found guilty.

The actor stood rigid and showed no emotion as the guilty verdicts on five of the six counts of disorderly conduct were read out in the Chicago courtroom by Judge James Linn last Thursday.

He then scuttled out of court with his family, refusing to answer questions, and he is yet to make a public comment. His sentencing date has not yet been set but he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.

Jury Selection Has Begun in the Jussie Smollett Criminal Trial | VIDEO

#JussieSmollett’s defense team let out a brutal cross-examination against the prosecution’s star witness on Thursday. The witness claimed the pair were dating, had masturbated together at a gay bathhouse, and the attack was fueled by a desire to be the actor’s security guard.

#AbimbolaOsundairo, 28, testified on the stand at a Chicago criminal court and was questioned for two hours by the actor’s defense attorney Shay Allen on day four of the trial.

Allen attempted to make Osundairo look like a liar, drug dealer, and opportunist who used his relationship with Smollett to further his career. He is also accused of telling the star he’d make this “all go away” and not testify if he and his brother, Olabinjo, were paid $1 million each.

“You told him if he gave you and your brother a million dollars each, you wouldn’t testify?”

Allen asked Osundairo, but his response was, “No.”

At the beginning of Allen’s cross-examination of the witness, she tried to claim that Smollett and Osundairo had a sexual relationship by suddenly asking when he and the actor started dating, the New York Post reported.

We were never dating,” said Osundairo, across the room, Smollett averted his gaze.

On Wednesday, Osundairo told jurors he and Smollett had gone to the Steamworks bathhouse together in Chicago’s Boystown neighborhood, a predominately gay community. On Thursday, Allen asked if gay pornography was played on the televisions inside the spa.

“I don’t recall,” Osundairo said.

“You don’t recall seeing gay pornography? … You don’t remember masturbating with him?” Allen questioned.

Osundairo said, “No.”

It’s finally come. We’re talking about the criminal case against former “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett. It began today (11/29/21) in Chicago with jury selection.

The case is all about Smollett being accused of lying to Chicago police about being the purported victim of an attack in Jan. 2019.

At the time, Smollett said that two men yelled racist and homophobic slurs at him, kicked him, poured bleach on him, put a noose around his neck, and told him, “This is MAGA country.” His account of the alleged incident drew the support of a number of politicians and celebrities, including then-Sen. Kamala Harris and Empire co-creator Lee Daniel.

Here’s more via NPR
Within days, however, police suspected that Smollett was not being truthful; within weeks, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said at a press conference that the actor “took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career.”

Two brothers who knew Smollett, Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, told investigators that the actor had recruited them to stage an attack. The Cook County state attorney, Kim Foxx, launched criminal charges against Smollett, but abruptly dropped the case about a month later.

Due to the public criticism of that decision, a Cook County judge ordered a special prosecutor, Dan Webb, to investigate both the alleged crime and the dropped Cook County case. In Feb. 2020, Webb unveiled a new grand-jury indictment against Smollett, including six charges of felony disorderly conduct, for which brings us to today where we find the actor.
