Julia Roberts, 55, reveals Martin Luther King Jr and his wife paid the HOSPITAL BILL for her birth because her parents couldn't afford it

Julia Roberts says Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife paid the hospital bill for her

  • In an interview with Gayle King back in September, the 55-year-old actress revealed that her mother and father had a close relationship with the Kings
  • Julia's parents, Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts, started their own children's acting school in Georgia; and MLK Jr. asked if his children could attend
  • Black kids were still not allowed in many schools, so when Julia's parents welcomed the Kings' children with open arms, the couple was touched
  • That's why, when Betty and Walter gave birth to Julia in 1967 and struggled to pay the medical bills, she said the political figure and his wife stepped in to help
  • It was previously reported that Julia's dad, Walter, was the personal acting coach to Martin and Coretta's daughter, Yolanda, who went on to become a big actress
  • Yolanda faced difficulties at the school due to her skin color, and someone even 'blew up' a car outside of the theater while she was performing in a play in 1965
  • Julia Roberts has a very interesting connection to activist Martin Luther King Jr. - it turns out, the activist and his wife, Coretta Scott King, actually paid the hospital bill for the actress' birth

That's why, when Betty and Walter gave birth to Julia in 1967 and struggled to pay the medical bills, the political figure and his wife stepped in to help.

'The King family paid for my hospital bills. My parents couldn't pay for the hospital bill,' Julia told Gayle.

'My parents had a theater school in Atlanta called the Actors and Writers Workshop,' she continued.

'And one day Coretta Scott King called my mother and asked if her kids could be part of the school because they were having a hard time finding a place that would accept her kids. And my mom was like, "Sure. Come on over." And so they just all became friends and they helped us out of a jam.'

Gayle pointed out that things were still very much separated during that time, as racism was rampant in American throughout the '60s.

'In the '60s, you didn't have black children interacting with white kids in acting school,' Gayle said to Julia in the interview. 'And your parents were like, "Come on in." That's extraordinary'

'And your parents were like, "Come on in." I think that's extraordinary. And it sort of lays the groundwork for who you are.'

    'Absolutely,' Julia agreed.

Observ.com previously reported that Julia's dad, Walter, was the personal acting coach to Martin and Coretta's eldest daughter, Yolanda King, who went on to become a well-known actress, appearing in movies like Fluke, Ghosts of Mississippi, Drive By: A Love Story, Funny Valentines, and The Secret Path, among others.

The outlet added that Yolanda faced some difficulties at the school due to her skin color, especially when she was cast as the romantic interest of a white actor in a play in 1965.

According to the publication, someone in the town - a former Ku Klux Klan member - became so enraged when they kissed that he 'blew up' a car outside of the theater, before screaming and throwing things onstage at the actors.

The boy who played her love interest, named Phillip Depoy, later opened up about the incident in an interview with ArtsAtl.Org.

The outlet added that Yolanda (seen as a baby) faced difficulties at the school due to her skin color, especially when she was cast as the romantic interest of a white actor in a play in 1965

'The most startling thing about it was the fact that most of the people in the parking lot responded very mildly,' he recalled.

'The car belched, then started to burn, and most people glanced that way and then back to the stage.

'So a car was on fire. It wasn’t a first for that particular parking lot. In fact, if the Klansman hadn’t been an idiot, and drunk, he might have gotten away without being identified.

'Instead, he chose to start screaming things toward the stage. Then he threw his beer bottle at the car to help it burn better.

'The cops who had been watching the show just wandered over, talked to him, put him in handcuffs and took him away with very little energy.

'Yolanda and I stared at each other. [Walter] came to the side of the stage and said something to the crowd.

'I couldn’t hear what it was, but almost everyone laughed and some applauded. Then he turned to us and said, “And the next line is?”'

Robert she was hot 30 years ago, she was Hollywood sweetheart so it would be ashamed to admit that her parents were so poor they were bailed out by a negro couple, but with the under cover racism in heart she too dumb to realize she could of ride that for years should she admitted it earlier than now, it would be a great thing to brah about a good deed from the most popular black man in America if not around the world, she is too dumb to be that smart but do like every white person, trying to use the black community when she feels they are her only way out, no one is trying to check for that old b**** right now, she just had a movie out who exactly saw it, come on now
