Caribbean Fever - Your ONLY destination to all things Caribbean and more

R&B star and Grammy award-winner Maxwell stopped by The Wendy Williams Show recently and he mentioned his Caribbean roots!

Ok it was a very brief mention, like the Jamaicans say “a tups” but hey, its great that he acknowledged his heritage-which by the way is a mix of Haitian and Puerto Rican. At one point in the interview Wendy said “you strike me like a guy where money isn’t everything and I bet you don’t eat bacon.”  He responded with a laugh, saying “I do eat bacon. Im from the Caribbean.

Maxwell says he takes care of his health and strikes a balance with his food choices. He’s a damn fine 42!!

Maxwell who has been off the scene for seven years also discussed his new album blackSUMMERS’night (the follow up to 2009s BLACKsummers’night) his headlining Essence Music Festival gig this summer and his love life (hello its Wendy Williams- you know she will ask!)

Here’s some excerpts:

On cutting off his signature afro: “I wanted to not be a haircut. I wanted to be music. I wanted to not be a gimmick, a caricature of myself and more importantly [people] who were more than how they looked were very much more interested in civil rights and representing an African American man in a way that was much more broader…I just wanted to evolve.

On what he’s been doing for the past seven years: Def. not living the hollywood lifestyle “I’m not interested in it, I see the pitfalls of all those sort of worlds, I don’t disrespect anyone’s hustle, you get there how you get there. The music, for me, is more important. Its the most important thing I feel that I will leave behind.

He’s been touring pretty much the entire time and working on his new music. Its great that Maxwell can literally tour just playing his old songs-they’re timeless!

On his love life: “I’m in love. I can say that I feel really a deep love…

He does admit though that he had his lady love are trying to find a balance in the relationship with him being on the road so much. Check out the interview below:

Maxwell hitting the talk show circuit is not doubt in aim to give support to his upcoming Summers’ Tour which kicks off June 10th in Tacoma Washington and ends August 7th in Jacksonville Florida. As the tour title suggests, fans will likely hear tracks off Maxwell’s upcoming LP including “Lake by the Ocean” released last month.
