Hundreds of families cram into Chinese outdoor swimming pool to beat the heat

  • Chinese families have flocked to outdoor swimming pools to escape the heat
  • Brightly coloured rubber rings were spotted flooding a pool in Nanjing, near Shanghai in east China
  • Temperatures in the region soared to 102F (39C) earlier in the week

Swimming has long been a popular sport in China, and as incomes across the country rise regional governments have been able to build new pool facilities to cope with rising demand

Hundreds of Chinese sunseekers have crammed into a huge outdoor swimming pool to beat the summer heat.

Swimmers at a lido in Nanjing, eastern China splashed around in brightly coloured rubber rings and enjoyed the evening under a setting sun.

Temperatures in the area soared to 97F (36C) on Saturday in the urban centre as a heatwave held a firm grip over the inland regions.

The temperature was just 3C off the UK's hottest ever temperature, recorded in Cambridge in July this year.
