A Florida-based healthcare company is coming under fire, and possibly under investigation, for placing a job vacancy ad in a newspaper specifically stating that it doesn’t want any Haitians.
The Interim Healthcare Inc. advertisement for a nursing position in West Haverstraw, published in an October 15 edition of a New York Pennysaver, states “no Haitians”.
The Haitian community has expressed outrage at what it says is a racist, discriminatory and illegal ad.
And New York State Senator David Carlucci has also chastised the company, saying its action was “outrageous discrimination in its purest form”.
“It is a direct violation of the Civil Rights act and is completely illegal. This company should be ashamed of itself, and Pennysaver should seriously reconsider running any job postings from this agency,” he said in a statement.
“My office will be urging the New York State Department of Labour as well as the federal Equal Opportunity Employment Commission to conduct a full investigation,” Carlucci added.
Founder of the Haitian American Nurses Association of Rockland County Berthilde Durfrene took to social media to express her outrage about the ad.
She called on all elected officials, community leaders, nurses and the community at large to speak out against the “ignorance” displayed by Interim Healthcare Inc.
“This is not just a disrespect of the Haitian nurses, but disrespect for the nursing discipline and the entire community that have benefited from the services and care provided by the Haitian nursing professionals,” she wrote.
Durfene has also called on the company to issue a publish apology.
