Nicholas Duffy managed to slide out the back door window of a police car travelling about 48km/h, despite his hands being cuffed behind his back.
Duffy told the police officer driving the car he was feeling sick and wanted to vomit, prompting the window to be lowered.
He then managed to unbuckle the seatbelt and slide out the window as it travelled along a freeway in Salt Lake City, Utah.
"The officer noticed he was trying to get out of the window," police lieutenant Victor Quezada told TV station Fox13.
"At that time, he slowed down from freeway speeds to about 30-35 [mp/h] where he then jumped out, still handcuffed.
"It's amazing he didn't get run over or die from the fall."
Duffy was arrested after being suspected of a burglary.
He will likely also face felony charges of attempting to escape from police.
