Find Out How R&B Superstar R. Kelly Saved this Music Teachers’ Home & Why

Reportedly the Pied Piper of R&B has stepped in the name of love by repaying his high school music teacher and mentor at Kenwood Academy for changing his life’s trajectory.

The Chicago Sun-Time reports that Grammy Award winning artist R. Kelly has helped to save the Chicago home of his former music teacher Ms. Lena McLin.

Ms. McLin, 87, had recently been struggling to keep her apartment of the last 36 years.  Apparently, the retired teacher’s pension that she receives, didn’t quite cover the condo conversion expenses that her apartment building is currently undergoing.

Upon learning of McLin’s predicament, Kelly immediately sprang into action by setting up a GoFundMe campaign in addition to performing a benefit concert in her honor at the Chicago Theater. As a result, McLin was able to buy her condo.

The move was a welcome one for Ms. Lena McLin, but in Kelly’s eyes, he owes much of his success to all of what Ms. McLin had done for him.

“On the first day I met her, Ms. McLin told me, ‘You’re going to be one of the greatest singers, songwriters and performers of all time. She taught me opera, classical music, jazz, gospel. She said, ‘You are music. You’re not in any one category. Anything you attempt, you’ll be able to tap into the spirit of it, and that’s the gift you have.’ She made me,” Kelly told The Sun-Times.

Thinking back over McLin’s influence, Kelly recalled being a little hesitant at first, before benching his dreams of a career in basketball and deciding to enter the music talent show with encouragement from McLin.

Upon hitting the stage for the show, it was on for R. Kelly.  Kelly states that this experience was for him, similar to Peter Parker being bit by the spider and said, “I’ve been spraying webs ever since, from that day on, life as I knew it was never the same.”

As the saying goes, the rest is history. All fans of Kellz owe a debt of gratitude to Ms. McLin too.  Thanks to her influence and support we now have umpteen versions of “Trapped in the Closet.”
