The chief cop whose officers are investigating the shocking death of an Indiana toddler who fell 150ft from a cruise ship has told DailyMail.com he has not ruled out murder.

Tragic Chloe Wiegand is thought to have slipped out of her grandfather's hands before plunging through an open window and over the side of a Royal Caribbean vessel as it prepared to depart Puerto Rico on Sunday.

But Sgt Jose D. Sanchez, acting head of the San Juan Police Department's Homicide Division, told DailyMail.com that it was premature to declare the incident an accident.

'There are various possibilities. It could be a homicide. It could be a murder. It could be an accident,' he said during an exclusive interview on Monday evening at police headquarters.

Family of toddler who fell to her death on Caribbean cruise ship says she fell out of open

  • Chloe Wiegand, 18 months, died on Sunday in San Juan, Puerto Rico
  • The toddler plummeted 150ft out of a window from the Freedom of the Seas ship
  • Police said initially her grandfather Salvatore Anello 'dangled' her outside
  • The family says this was not the case and that he was propping her up against what he thought was a closed window
  • Chloe loved to look out from windows and bang on the glass like she did at her older brother's ice hockey games, they said
  • Anello propped her up on a railing to let her do it on the ship but when she leaned forward, she fell straight through a gaping hole
  • He had to be sedated afterwards because he was so upset
  • Now, they are blaming Royal Caribbean and say it was negligent by not making clear there was no glass in the window This is the window on the 11th floor of the cruise ship which Chloe fell out of. Her grandfather says it was the only one that which did not have any glass fitted in it out of an entire wall

The family of an Indiana toddler who fell 150ft to her death from a cruise ship on Sunday have blamed the liner for her death, saying she died by falling through a window which had been left open in the kids' play area.

Chloe Wiegand died after falling from the Freedom of the Seas Royal Caribbean cruise ship onto a concrete dock in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Sunday afternoon.

Police said she had been in her grandfather Salvatore Anello's arms and that he lost his grip on her. They were on the 11th floor of the ship where there is a kids' pool known as the 'H20 zone'.

On Tuesday, a lawyer hired by the family revealed that Anello had put Chloe up on a wooden railing which to let her bang on the glass, as she loved to do at her older brothers' ice hockey games.

Chloe Wiegand, shown with her grandfather Salvatore Anello, died on Sunday in Puerto Rico. Her family says he was holding her up to a window to let her bang on the glass but she fell out when she leaned forward and there was none there

Don’t be so judgmental and idiots. If you’ve been on a cruise ship, this could easily happen to a family member. Plus the entire family was RIGHT there. He is not negligent. A horrible mistake.

I really hope there is video of what happpend because how can you stand next to a large open window and not feel the breeze or hear noise coming from the outside. I wonder if he was drinking or has very poor eyesight. In either case that poor child died for absolutely nothing. I am not sure how the cruise line is responsible for this.

Why would you prop a child on the window edge anyway?  He was negligent.

This is very sad. Parents, watch your babies. It only takes a second for tragedy to happen.

This is so heartbreaking BUT to blame the ship for your stupidity is absolutely unbelievable. May she RIP
