The song features audio of Garner shouting, 'I can’t breathe!' followed by his daughter Erica Garner and his brother Steven Flagg rapping about their grief for the Staten Island man who died July 17 after an officer put him in a chokehold.
Eric Garner’s memory lives on “This Ends Today,” his prophetic declaration to police and the title of a rap sang by his relatives.
“Who is the man with the strength to choose, when the rest refuse?” daughter Erica Garner laments. “This ends today.”
“It just came from the heart,” the 24-year-old stay-at-home mom told the Daily News. “It’s the first time I ever recorded. We want to get it out there on the radio, anywhere, so as many people as possible hear it.”
She said it was especially emotional for her when her own daughter, Alyssa, 5, recognized her granddad’s voice in the song, which opens with him yelling, “This ends today” at cops and then, as he’s brought to the ground with a chokehold, “I can’t breathe.”
