BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE owner of Fashion Gallery on Central Street in Basseterre, Iditha Thomas, has a life-long scar above her left eye following an encounter with a juvenile bandit in the USA on Friday, November 25, 2011.
In an exclusive interview with SKNVibes, Thomas recounted her ordeal while in Miami to purchase items to boost her income during the Christmas/Carnival Season.
“I was at a bus stop in Miami waiting to go shopping. While seated at the bus stop with another lady, a tall young guy was walking past and he made a sudden stop. He took two steps backwards and held on to a chain I was wearing around my neck. Instinctively, I retaliated by also holding to it and he started hitting me in my face.
“I jumped up and I held on to him and he gave me a box in my face, knocked me down and started pulling my bag in which I had my money to go shopping. He took away the bag while I was on the ground. I started to feel very weak and was slowly going into a semi-conscious state when a gentleman came up, took off his shirt and tied it over my eye to stop the flow of blood,” Thomas said.
She added that the incident had attracted a relatively large crowd and some of the public-spirited people gave chase and caught the juvenile, who had tried to run away from the scene.
“Shortly after they caught him, a gentleman, who was in the company of his wife and their child, came up to me and said, ‘Mam, I have your purse.’ He then gave it to me and I felt relieved, but the pain over my left eye was almost unbearable.”
The entrepreneur said that someone had summoned the paramedics and they took her to a hospital.
“While at the hospital, a detective came and took me to the scene of the crime. He then asked to identify the person who wounded me and took away my bag. I did identify the same young man and they arrested him,” Thomas recounted.
She also said that medical staff at the hospital treated her for the injuries she suffered, which included a cut over her left eye that “carried nine stitches”.

Caribbean Fever got so Ghetto fabulous...I have seen so much leave, because of people's attitude here. Good thing I only past through on occasions...sigh
@ TallIslandgirl you are so right, tourist, whether it be on the NY Subway or in the islands are very detectable. I am a NYer who lived in Maryland for 18months and they could tell I was not from there.
SMDH!
PUT HIM IN JAIL ASSAULT IN THE 1ST DEGREE
I never said “her” baby, I said West Indian and I’m speaking from experience, you know how many times I had to say to some of my West Indian sisters to do not publicly display currency content And don’t travel with too much cash shittttttt.
Evolution that is such an unfair statement. America does not have to do anything special or different to cater to Tourist; any and every country/Island SHOULD cater to all citizens and/or occupants of the population at all times. Granted the cops are not going to be at every square foot 24/7, there are going to be illegal activities without arrest...in this istant it's good to know bystanders were quick to jump into action and apprenend the IDIOT. Also, according to the report, this visitor was @ the Bus stop waiting on transport to go shopping, no where did I read she was showing off her money & credit cards. It was Black Friday, so the IDIOT knew that day will be perfect to perform his illegal trade, and was out there taking advantage of it... Kudos to all who assisted Ms. St. Kitts, happy her bag was retrieved and hopefully her chain too...this type of criminal behavior is all over the Globe...unfortunately.
West Indian folks have to learn before they come here that, America do not cater for tourist especially the Negro kind. Some folks left the islands to come out here and shop showing all their money and credits cards to whoever can see that they have money and that is not cool.
I just don't get it. Ppl work so hard to acquire what they have and these dang hoodlums just want to run the streets and take ppl's stuff!!! Heaven knows she should have had a gun and blow his dam head off his body. I am sick and tired of this madness... Go and find yourself a job!! You all drop out of high school expecting the world to hand things to you all... I am not saying this is the case of all young ppl but the ones who continue to want ppl to live in fear. YOu can't enjoy wearing your jewelry which you have worked hard to buy and dem dam madness... strupeesssss.. That day will come when I will read on this very blog page where someone will go and attempt to rob and gets their dam head blown off....
