Caribbean Fever - Your ONLY destination to all things Caribbean and more
The daily headlines seem to be the same…”actor files for bankruptcy, rapper caught cheating, athlete breaks record, politician said what?” It’s the daily diet that feeds the non-stop voracious appetite for content that the internet produced. Reading about our favorite celeb or getting a bit of lighter news instead of the day-to-day dreary news of war, famine and crime can certainly help stave off that depressing after-taste that most mainstream news leaves viewers with. But as we all clamor to listen to what outrageous outfit so-and-so starlet wore to this awards function or what such-and-such singer said when he dropped his new record, what serious information are we missing that we should know about?
This Facebook video caught our attention because it shows how mainstream media swarms around the sensational headlines and ignores the stories around the world that are changing or threatening our lives or the lives of other Americans. Take a look:
Remember that study from a couple of years ago (Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies) that said American adults are the least intelligent on a global scale when it comes to math, reading and problem-solving using technology. MIT Professor Jonathan Gruber once commented that Obamacare passed because of the “stupidity of the American voter” meaning the average voter isn’t well versed on the issues of politics or how laws will impact us.
It’s great to watch the local, national news of your choice, but don’t just let the networks spoon feed you what you should know. Facebook, IG and all social media can be used to make us aware of more than just what new outfits you purchased or birthday wishes. Alternative digital news sources like TRN, countless others on Youtube are cropping up because most of recognize that we’re only being told half of some stories and none of others that we really should know about. The truth is out there, we just have to dig for it and its worth the work because ignorance isn’t bliss–it’s just ignorance.
We all know about Trump building the wall, Kaepernick’s protest and “Empire’s” ratings, but be honest, did any of us know about big banks planning for nuclear winter or dogs being used to attack Dakota Access pipeline protesters? It seems we all need to wake up and really see what’s happening around us and not wait for the daily paper or nightly news to tell us about it.
