Rapper Chubb Rock was one of the dopest in the rap game. But he didn’t start out like most of the rappers we know today. In fact, before his crazy lyricism, the first craft he was mastering was medicine.
Chubb Rock (born Richard Simpson) was actually a pre-med student getting his degree at Brown University. He was also a national merit scholar. Instead, he dropped out of Brown to pursue his music career. It was definitely a high risk that led to an even greater reward.
The rapper was first discovered by his cousin DJ Howie Tee. Chubb Rock appeared on the scene with his debut hit, the self-titled “Chubb Rock” back in 1988. He turned around with another hit in 89 called “And the winner is…” His later hit “Ya Bad Chubbs” was produced by The Latter, which got some playtime on Yo! MTV Raps.
‘In 1991, his album The One was ranked number 13 on the Billboard’s Top Hip-Hop/R&B chart. From that release, he would bring us his most famous records, “Treat em Right,” “Just The Two of Us,” and “The Chubbster”, which made it to N.1 on the Billboard’s “Top Rap Single” that very same year.
In the following year, his next relase of “I Gotta Get Mine Yo” had featured guest performances from Grand Puda Maxwell and Poke. This album would then put the producers Trackmasters on the map as they handled the recording and production duties. Chuck also made an appearance on MC Serch’s song “Back to the Grill” back in 1992. The rapper is also a member of the Crooklyn Dodgers, that featured the rappers OC and Jeru The Damaia.
