COVID-19 now has two new subvariants that are being identified in a number of the infected persons in America’s latest spike. BA.4 and BA.5 are byproducts of Omicron that are the fastest-spreading COVID-19 subvariants and the hardest to escape regardless of being vaccinated.
According to reports from Baller Alert, almost 54% of active COVID-19 cases in the U.S. are BA.5 since July 2.
Reports from NBC 5 Chicago outline that both subvariants are three times less sensitive to being disarmed by the current COVID-19 vaccines than the first Omicron variant BA.1. BA.4 and BA.5 are also four times more resistant to the antibodies found in the vaccines.
It was reported that persons who were previously infected with the older variants are still possible of being infected with the newest strain, BA.5.
The prime symptoms of BA.5 are fever, sore throat, runny nose, headaches, coughing, fatigue and muscle pain.
Chief of Pediatric infectious diseases at UC Davis Children’s Hospital Dean Blumberg reported that most of the infected patients are not critically ill as they are released from the hospital to further recover at home. Being that a majority of the patients are not severely ill, there is no increase in deaths.”
On the other hand, UCSF’s Chair of Medicine Dr. Bob Wachtal talks about the new BA.5 variant that he calls ‘a beast with a new superpower,” in an interview with CBS.
