UPDATE with [PICS+AUDIO] Reggae artist Captain Barkey gunned down with secret girlfriend had taunted romantic rival & accused killer in song

Tracy Bennett and Wayne Hamilton were murdered outside a seedy motel.

A jilted lover wanted for the Bronx murder of his ex-girlfriend and her reggae-singer beau committed suicide in a Miami apartment, a New York law enforcement source told the Daily News Wednesday.

Fugitive Joseph Kernizan, 42, fatally shot himself in the head as the law closed in on his first-floor Florida refuge about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, the source said.

Cops believe Kernizan gunned down his ex-girlfriend, Tracy Bennett, 38, and popular reggae singer Wayne Hamilton, 50, outside the Holiday Motel in Eastchester Saturday morning.

Kernizan and Bennett had two children together, but she had been dating Hamilton for about five years before the killings outside the hot sheets motel.

NYPD detectives tracked the suspect to a two-story, four-family house in Miami, which was encircled with help of federal marshals and Miami police, the source said.

After cops used a bullhorn to order the residents out of their building, Kernizan tried to escape out the back door — only to find the waiting police, the source said.

The suspect bolted back inside, and gunshots were heard moments later from a first-floor apartment. A robot with a camera was sent inside and spotted the body.

A Bronx Felony Squad detective made a tentative ID of the suspect after going into the apartment. A .380-caliber handgun was found near the body, which had a gunshot wound to the head.

Kernizan, a squat 5-foot-5 and 220 pounds, was the father of Bennett's two younger children and was “obsessed” with her, growing enraged when she tried to break away and sought an order of protection against him, a friend of hers told the Daily News.

He was arrested in August after allegedly violating a protection order at the Elmont, L.I., home that he and Bennett shared, court records show.

The married Hamilton, whose wife at home in Milwaukee did not know about his relationship with Bennett, also may have baited his alleged killer in a 2010 song called “Nah Lef Joe.”

In the 2010 tune, Hamilton, 50, better known as Captain Barkey, sang of bedding a woman, then complaining in the chorus, “She tell me she nah lef Joe.”

A friend of Bennett's told The News the song was about Bennett and Kernizan, although other followers of the reggae/dancehall genre say it may have been about cheating in general.

In a photo of Hamilton and Bennett taken in May at Mingles Cafe in the Bronx, the reggae singer was decked out in a black suit with his arm around his lover. Bennett wore a short purple, black and silver dress and pumps.

Sources, including Hamilton's longtime music partner David (Wickerman) Taylor, said Hamilton and Kernizan had feuded in the past when Hamilton came to New York to play shows.

Wickerman said Kernizan once crashed a car into a vehicle carrying Hamilton and Bennett.

“Everyone knew this was a bad situation,” said one New York-based reggae deejay, who did not wish to be identified. “People knew that this was going to end badly.”

Joseph Kernizan, suspect in double slaying outside the Holiday Motel in the Bronx.

The popular reggae singer gunned down with his secret girlfriend outside a seedy Bronx hotel had taunted his romantic rival and accused killer in song.

In “Nah Lef Joe,” released in 2010, Wayne Hamilton, 50, better known as Captain Barkey, sang of bedding a woman, then complaining in the chorus, “She tell me she nah lef Joe.”

Friends said the song was aimed at Joseph Kernizan, 42, the man cops are hunting for killing Hamilton and his lover Tracy Bennett early Saturday outside the Holiday Motel, where the doomed duo had booked a room.

“It’s a song about her not leaving Joe,” said Bennett’s longtime friend Bella, who declined to give her last name.

“He was begging her to leave Joe for a long time.”

People close to Hamilton had repeatedly cautioned him to break off the steamy affair, warning him that Kernizan was “a serious man,” dancehall artist Wickerman told Jamaican entertainment news site One876Entertainment Saturday.

Bennett and Hamilton were about to get in her white Toyota Camry after an apparent early morning tryst at the hot-sheets motel when cops say they were confronted by Kernizan, a music promoter on Long Island who went by the nickname “Country.”

“Don’t do it! Don’t do it!” Bennett wailed, witnesses said, as she and Hamilton were gunned down.

Tracy Bennett begged for her life before she was shot dead.

Bennett, a nurse at a Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, L.I., had been dating the reggae star for five years, friends said.

Meanwhile, she struggled to leave Kernizan, the father of two of her three children.“He was so obsessed with her,” Bella said. As Bennett moved toward independence, even taking out an order of protection against Kernizan, he grew more enraged, the friend said.

“I know he wanted her dead — and the lover,” Bella said.
Other neighbors have said that police were frequently called to the house Kernizan and Bennett shared in Elmont. Hamilton, best known for his 1996 hit “Go Go Wine,” lived in Milwaukee with his wife, Mavis Hamilton.

She knew nothing about his affair with Bennett, even though he alluded to it in song.  “Now that he’s dead, what can I do?” Mavis Hamilton, 48, said. “The memories that I’ll keep is the man that I know that loved me.” She left worried messages for him when she didn’t hear from him after taking him to the airport Friday for his New York trip.”

Mavis Hamilton, wife of reggae singer Wayne Hamilton, said she knew nothing of her late husband's affair with Tracy Bennett.

Hamilton started his reggae career in his native Jamaica, before moving to the U.S.. “He was the funniest, kindest, most loving person you would ever meet,” his wife said.

Bennett’s alleged killer is the father of her two younger children, a 12-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy. Her oldest child, her daughter Dajahnae, 18, rushed home from the University of Baltimore after learning her mom was dead. “She may have to drop out,” said  the student’s anguished father, Andre, who declined to give his last name.”

Police say Wayne Hamilton (pictured) and lover Tracy Bennett were ambushed by Bennett's ex Joseph Kernizan.

Tracy Bennett had been secretly dating Hamilton for five years.

“Cops described Kernizan as 5-foot-5 and 220 pounds. Tenants at a house he owned in Canarsie, Brooklyn, said he also owned a nearby barbershop, opened a club in West Hempstead, L.I., and owned four different cars.

“If he did it, this guy is very stupid,” said Laennec Germain, 73. “If you got money and she doesn’t want you, find another one.”

Police investigate the scene where a double shooting took place at the Holiday Motel, 2291 New England Thruway, in The Bronx. No arrests have been made.

A lone gunman, ignoring repeated pleas for mercy, cold-bloodedly murdered a man and a woman in a Bronx motel parking lot early Saturday, police and witnesses said.

“Don’t do it! Don’t do it!” the woman wailed, according to witnesses, before the shooter gunned her down outside the Holiday Motel.

The execution-like slayings occurred after the gunman approached the unidentified man outside the motel office near Co-Op City around 3:15 a.m., sources and witnesses said.

The shooter pumped several shots into the man as he tried to flee, witnesses said. The suspect then turned his pistol on a woman standing near a parked Toyota Camry, its motor still running.

“I looked out my window and saw a lady standing there,” said Ricky Gugliotta, who was staying in a nearby room with some friends celebrating a pal’s birthday.

“She was begging him not to shoot her, but then he shot her twice and she went down.”

Cops arrived to find both the victims dead at the scene. The man was 50, and the woman was 38.

The suspect, described as a bald man, sped away in a blue Honda sedan, sources said.

It was not immediately clear if the victims were staying at the motel. Investigators were still trying to determine the motive behind the brutal double murder.

Damone Jackson, 38, was pulling out of the lot with his girlfriend after they decided to go to another motel when the gunfire erupted.

“I saw the guy running around. He was dancing all over the place,” Jackson said. “Then, I heard the shots. It sounded like about 30 shots. It was like two clips worth.”

Jackson said he was about to go to the office to book a room, but his girlfriend insisted on finding another place to stay.

“I was about to check in five minutes before it happened,” he said. “I thank God that I didn’t come in here. I thank God.”

@Sharon- ok...the dismiss urself comment was sarcasm but if u are offended, then excuse me...u shouldn't feel like the word tomfoolery is an attack though...anyhow, this conversation seems to never end and im tired of going around and around so let's just agree to disagree and finish this thing

@ Tangie I am here to argue my points just like you. Although I might disagree with some of your views that doesn't make me right & you  wrong or vice versa but when you address me in your comments & use words like tomfoolery and dismiss yourself  I feel you're attacking me.

@ SuperMe I wouldn't stoop to your level.

@Sharon- if you feell attacked, then so be it...I'm here to argue my points and like SuperMe said, if you are going to dish it be prepared to receive it.  No one can program me or control this mouth!

@ Tangie why you feel the need to attack a person everytime they give their opinion. You claim to be an attorney and that's good I'm happy for u,u are a sister doing her thing.  I find u to be very cocky and arrogant. We're not in court. My brother is an attorney since he was age 29 & my spouse is an attorney working for the state of NY for over 15 years and their attitude is totally different. You're not the only educated person on this blog. I have a Master's degree,so please. Like I said before I respect everyone's opinion whether I agree with them or not.

@ Sweet P I applaud your comment my sister.

@Sharon- oh cry me a river...I've already addressed you before about the religious perspective and won't waste my time this case, Tracy's body was not her own to do as she's God's since u wanna play that "I can quote the Bible" game. And I find it ironic that u bring up Jesus and the adulteress. Jesus told her to "go and sin NO MORE" but somehow u conveniently left that out of ur cut-n-paste version. Dismiss yourself with that tomfoolery cause I ain't having it.
Comment by sharon hall on October 27, 2012 at 6:21pm

Bottom line it was her body & she has the right to do as she please. She didn't deserve to die. She was a respected human being she earned her living as a RN taking care of her kids, she was back in school to become a nurse practitioner. She wasn't a menace to society. I do condone that kind of behavior she and u guys could judge me too if u please because u guys don't define the kind of person. We don't know what led to the relationship we can't say how, when & where we find true love. It seems like she had no way of getting out of the relationship with Joe alive. "Ye without sin cast the first stone" for christians who happen to know the bible remember when they took the adultress to Jesus  remember what Jesus told them. I find ppl are quick to chastise ppl for doing what they want with their bodies. I hope u judges are following the 10 commandments. like keepping the sabbath day holy, not bearing false witness against your neighbor, covet, worship grave images etc,
