A high school teacher already accused of sending a photo of his genitals to a 16-year-old student was charged Tuesday with three dozen new counts, including kidnapping and criminal sex acts with students.
Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth P. Thompson called the charges against Sean Shaynack, of East Flatbush, “shocking.”
The 44-year-old educator was arrested Tuesday when he showed up for a court appearance in connection with an earlier case, also involving students.
Shaynack taught math and science at Brooklyn Technical High School. A worker in the principal’s office could not confirm Shaynack’s employment status but a search of the school’s website shows Shaynack’s name missing from the list of teachers.
Investigators uncovered the latest alleged abuse by searching the suspect’s computer, the DA said.
In the new case, Shaynack is accused of kidnapping, criminal sex act, disseminating indecent material, endangering the welfare of a child, sexual abuse and other charges. He faces up to 25 years on the top charge, and his bail has been set at $750,000.
Sean Shaynack, who taught at Brooklyn Technical High School, is accused of dozens of sex crimes involving students, some as young as 13.
Thirty-six new charges involving six females — ages 13 to 19 — were levied against Shaynack Tuesday. They reference alleged abuse that happened between 2011 and 2014.
Prosecutors allege that Shaynack took a 15-year-old student to a nude beach in New Jersey without her parents’ consent. He allegedly performed a sex act on an 18-year-old student without her consent, and allegedly asked two minor girls to have sex with each other.
He’s suspected of sending photos of his genitalia to four students, two of them minors; allegedly engaging in sex acts with students ages 18 and 19; and inappropriately touching and kissing students.
Shaynack is also accused of giving alcohol and cigarettes to minors, allegedly terrorizing a former student with whom he had a relationship and resisting arrest when detectives first encountered him last month.
The teacher was first arrested Aug. 26. A search warrant along with three computers and two phones seized from his Brooklyn home revealed thousands of text messages and hundreds of photographs and videos, authorities said.
In the first case, he was accused of first-degree disseminating indecent material to a minor, third-degree obscenity, endangering the welfare of a minor and second-degree harassment, the DA said.
Bail in that case, to which he pleaded not guilty, has been raised to $250,000 bond. He faces up to seven years in prison in that case.
