Boxing legend Pernell 'Sweet Pea' Whitaker, 55, dies after being hit by a car in Virginia

  • The accident took place in an intersection just after 10.04pm Sunday
  • A family member identified the victim as Whitaker, local station WTKR reported
  •  The driver stayed on the scene to speak with police and it is unclear whether he was arrested as the investigation is ongoing
  • Whitaker is a Virginia Beach native known internationally for his boxing career
  • Over his three-decade career, Whitaker won championships in four WBC weight classes: Lightweight, Light welterweight, Welterweight and Light middleweight 
  • He took home a gold medal for the US at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles

Boxing legend Pernell 'Sweet Pea' Whitaker has died aged 55 after being struck by a car in his hometown of Virginia Beach. 

Authorities responded to reports of an accident at the intersection of Northampton Boulevard and Baker Road just after 10.04pm Sunday. 

Officers found the man who had been struck by a car and was seriously injured. He later died, and a family member confirmed the victim was Whitaker, WTKR reported.  

The crash is still under investigation. The driver stayed on the scene to speak with police and it is unclear whether he was arrested.

So tragic and sad ,people really must remember not to expect car drivers to see them.
People really need to pay attention when walking near streets.
