Billy Dee Williams says ‘gender fluid’ narrative about him from interview is mistaken

Late last week legendary actor Billy Dee Williams made headlines for after saying that he was what was interpreted as “gender fluid.” But he now says that was a miscommunication and he actually does not even know what the phrase means.

In an interview with Esquire, Williams, 82, said he used both male and female pronouns in describing himself.
“I think of myself as a relatively colorful character who doesn’t take himself or herself too seriously,” Williams told Esquire.
“And you see I say ‘himself’ and ‘herself,’ because I also see myself as feminine as well as masculine. I’m a very soft person. I’m not afraid to show that side of myself.”
In a follow-up with The Undefeated, Williams stated that not only was he misinterpreted, but he has no idea what the phrase meant. “What the hell is gender fluid,” the actor said.

“What I was talking about was about men getting in touch with their softer side of themselves,” Williams said. “There’s a phrase that was coined by Carl G. Jung, who was a psychiatrist, who was a contemporary of Sigmund Freud, and they had a splitting of the ways because they had different ideas about the … what do you call it? Consciousness. Unconscious. It’s collective unconsciousness. But he coined a phrase that’s, ‘Anima animus.’ And anima means that is the female counterpart of the male self, and the animus is the male counterpart of the female. So that’s what I was referring to.”

Williams goes on to say that he was talking about men being in touch with the female side of themselves and nothing to do with sexual identity or the act of sex itself. He would go on to say he was shocked by the headlines that followed the interview.

“No, no, no, I’m not gay — by any stretch of the imagination. Not that I have anything against gay people. But personally? Not gay,” Williams said.

Instead, he refers to himself as a man and joked with The Undefeated that he is a “very cute man.”

Williams will return to the silver screen in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, due out Dec. 20 in his signature role of Lando Calrissian, which he portrayed in The Empire Strikes Backin 1980 and Return of the Jedi in 1983.

Billy Dee Williams Comes Out The Closet - I'm Gender Fluid

Legendary actor Billy Dee Williams has come out - as gender fluid. That means he doesn't consider himself to be a male, or female exclusively - he's both.

The 82 year old Star Wars actor recently opened up about his "gender fluidity" in an interview with Esquire. The actor uses the pronouns he/him and she/her to describe himself. "I say ‘himself’ and ‘herself,’ because I also see myself as feminine as well as masculine," he said. "I’m a very soft person. I’m not afraid to show that side of myself.”

“I never tried to be anything except myself,” Williams told Esquire in an interview that published Tuesday.

“And you see I say ‘himself’ and ‘herself,’ because I also see myself as feminine as well as masculine,” he added. “I’m a very soft person. I’m not afraid to show that side of myself.”

Williams reprised his iconic role as the smuggler turned Cloud City administrator in the upcoming installment of the space fantasy series, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” which is slated to hit theaters on Dec. 20.

Billie Dee also claimed that the most memorable moment of his career as his role in Brian's Song as Gale Sayers, a 1971 Emmy award winning film about two football players who were roommates and best friends.

“It was a love story, really," Williams said of that film. "Between two guys. Without sex. It ended up being a kind of breakthrough in terms of racial division.”

Alrighty then . . .

Oh well! Not sure what he means, but I know one thing our black men need to stop this feminine s***, get in touch with that side and this side. We are losing our black men in so many ways to its just down right unacceptable. If we not killing one another damn we killing our strength in manhood, the masculinity that determine who men are. To hell with that getting in touch with the female side, be male and be strong. Look what it is doing to this generation of black males and the future. If they not on the DL, they coming out with all kinds of names to justify their actions and behavior, not to mention the pants off the butt, the fashions and hairstyles they are wearing. More and more can't tell who are the males and who are the females. Just stop it! already.

This article is just about as confusing as the quotes in it. The iconic one never said anything about desiring same sex, or any sex therein. You all gonna miss the "Bingo Long" when him gone, and ya children will recognize whose appreciative and whose the losers are.

He describes himself as himself or herself, feels like he's both male and female and at 82 says he's gender fluid? Sounds more like senility than anything else.
