Barbados Tops Caribbean in World’s Most Powerful Passport Rankings

Barbados has the most powerful passport in the Caribbean and the 50th most powerful in the world, according to the results of a 2017 world travel ranking.

The latest ranking, released by, takes into account the number of visa-free regions and countries that a passport has access to. It includes destinations that are completely visa-free and those that require a visa on arrival.

Barbados’ passport, which allows its holders to travel to 132 countries without having to get a visa before departure, is followed by Caribbean neighbours The Bahamas, which allows visa-free travel to 129 countries and is ranked 53rd in the world, and Antigua and Barbuda which allows visa-free travel to 124 countries and is ranked 54th in the word.

Ranking fourth in the Caribbean and 57th in the world is St Kitts and Nevis, followed by Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, and St Vincent and the Grenadines, with world rankings of 59th, 61st and 62nd respectively.

St Lucia ranked 66th in the world, followed by Grenada, Dominica and Honduras, which took the 70th, 72nd and 76th places.

Further down the list were Belize, with a world ranking of 97, Jamaica (100), Guyana (103) and Suriname (109).

Cuba, The Dominican Republic and Haiti brought up the rear, with world rankings of 128th, 149th and 150th of the 199 countries surveyed.

Germany’s passport, which allows its holders to travel to 158 countries around the world without having to get a visa before departure, ranks top in the world. The country held the same position last year but it now offers one less destination compared to 2016.

Afghanistan has the least powerful passport out of 199 countries, allowing its nationals to travel to just 23 countries and regions without having to obtain a visa beforehand. It’s preceded by Pakistan, Iraq and Syria, which are open to 26, 28 and 29 countries and regions respectively.

The list is updated each year and varies according to the visa-waivers that were signed during the year.
