A Trans Guyana Airways Britten Norman Islander skid off the runway at Port Kaituma yesterday morning while attempting to land during rainy weather.
According to a report in the Stabroek News, several passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated at the Port Kaituma Hospital. Reports are that the aircraft circled the aerodrome several times before making the landing attempt at the airport in the island’s interior.
The main landing gear (nose wheel) of the aircraft was damaged during the landing and it ended up slipping off the runway and crashing into a fence.
This is the second incident in which a plane has crashed in Guyana in less than a month. On July 30, a Caribbean Airlines Boeing 737-800 also overshot the runway at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and broke in two. Several passengers were seriously injured in that incident as well.
Guyana Civil Aviation Authority inspectors are investigating the incident. (Stabroek News)
Comment
Actually this crash happened at a different airport in the interior of Guyana at Port Kaituma and it was a local flight. Port Kaituma is close to the Venezuela border and is on the main land, not an island. Thankfully all three passengers and pilot survived.
