29 People Killed After El Chapo’s Son Arrest Ahead of Joe Biden's Visit to Mexico

A police and military-led operation in Mexico on Thursday led to the apprehension of the son of notorious drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, according to the government of Mexico. El Chapo’s son, whose given name is Ovidio Guzman and nicknamed "El Raton," which translates to "The Mouse," was arrested in the city of Culiacan.

The 32-year-old is said to have been running his father’s illegal operations since 2017 when his father was handed over to the United States government as a prisoner. The operation took place in Culiacan, a northwest city in the country; after he was held, a military plane took him to Mexico City.

It was reported that the raid took place after an intensive six months of gathering information about the whereabouts of Ovidio Guzman. The United States of America was offering a $5 million reward for information that could lead to the arrest of Ovidio Guzman, as he is an alleged fabled member of the Sinaloa cartel.

The Defense Secretary of Mexico, Luis Cresencio Sandoval, reported that after the operation had finished and a count was done, they discovered that nineteen henchmen for the drug trafficker were killed. Still, sadly, ten members of the military lost their lives in the line of duty.

As news of Ovidio Guzman’s capture travelled through Mexico, the city of Culiacan was turned into a lawless war zone as gunfire and arson enveloped the city. It was reported that schools were suspended and that one Mexico National Guardsman was murdered.

Reports also indicated that approximately 28 civilians had been wounded in the attack on the state. On the other hand, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is still preparing to welcome United States President Joe Biden to the country for the North American leaders' summit in the coming week. It is said that the security at the summit will, however, be high as it is the main priority.
