LeBron James seen for the first time since son Bronny was rushed to ICU following cardiac arrest

Bronny James, the 18-year-old son of NBA legend LeBron James, has been released from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after being treated for a sudden cardiac arrest, according to the hospital.
“Although his workup will be ongoing, we are hopeful for his continued progress and are encouraged by his response, resilience, and his family and community support,” Dr. Merije Chukumerije, a cardiologist at the hospital, said.

“He arrived at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center fully conscious, neurologically intact, and stable,” Chukumerije said.

Earlier, LeBron James tweeted about his son, an incoming freshman for the USC men’s basketball team and a top collegiate prospect, for the first time since the practice incident, thanking well-wishers for sending his family “love and prayers.”

“We feel you and I’m so grateful. Everyone doing great,” the Lakers star wrote. “We have our family together, safe and healthy, and we feel your love. Will have more to say when we’re ready but I wanted to tell everyone how much your support has meant to all of us! #JamesGang”

Cardiac arrest occurs when electrical disturbances cause the heart to suddenly stop beating. It may be fatal if not immediately treated but can be reversed by CPR and a defibrillator, according to the American Heart Association.

Sudden cardiac arrest among young athletes is rare but not unheard of. A 2011 study that examined NCAA student-athlete sudden deaths between 2004 and 2008 found cardiovascular-related sudden death was the leading cause of death in 45 cases, or about 9 each year.

However, Dr. Jonathan Drezner, who specializes in sports cardiology at the University of Washington Medical Center, told CNN that James “represents the single highest athlete risk group” for sudden cardiac arrest. Drezner’s research shows Black male NCAA athletes who play Division I basketball have a 1 in 2,000 chance of experiencing sudden cardiac arrest each year. The risk in a White male Division I basketball player is 1 in 5,000, according to his research.

“Adolescent male basketball players and college male basketball players, for reasons that we don’t fully understand, are by far our single highest risk group of athletes for sudden cardiac arrest,” Drezner said. “In my opinion, they should all be screened with more robust and intensive cardiac screening than occurs typically.”

Bronny James had a cardiac screening several months ago as part of a program for prospective NBA players, according to a source familiar with the matter. The screening included a transthoracic echocardiogram, which looks at blood flow through the heart and heart valves, and an EKG, which is a recording of the heart’s electrical activity, the source said. Both screenings came back with normal results.

The 6-foot-3 combo guard graduated this spring from Sierra Canyon High School in Los Angeles, where he averaged 14.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.7 steals his senior year. He was rated a four-star recruit, and he stood out in the McDonald’s All-American Game in March, featuring some of the country’s top high school basketball players.

Experts say it’s hard to map out exactly what James’ recovery will look like until more is known about the cause of his cardiac arrest and his specific health condition. But the fact that he was treated immediately and is already out of the intensive care unit bodes well for his recovery, Drezner said.

Buffalo Bills star Damar Hamlin sent his prayers to Bronny James and the James family after the 18-year-old collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest. 
Bronny, the son of NBA superstar LeBron, was rushed to hospital following the cardiac arrest during a training session at USC's Galen Center on Monday morning, his family confirmed today. 
He is now in a stable condition and has been released from intensive care.
Hamlin, 25, suffered cardiac arrest on January 2 when he collapsed on the field during the Bills' Week 17 game against the Cincinnati Bengals and had to be resuscitated. 
The NFL safety has made a miraculous recovery and pledged to be there to support the James family as Bronny goes through the same process.
'Prayers to Bronny & The James family as well,' Hamlin tweeted alongside a praying emoji. 'Here for you guys just like you have been for me my entire process.'

Bronny's cardiac arrest comes less than seven months after Hamlin's own on-field collapse but the football player is already preparing for his near-miraculous return to the NFL. 

Hamlin is practicing with his teammates and is expected to return as normal ahead of the new season, although it is unclear how the Bills staff will deal with his gametime. 

In recent weeks, Hamlin has been on a 'CPR Tour' around America that began in Buffalo in early June - the player's way of trying to give back to the first responders who used CPR to save his life.

He also recently attended the ESPY awards, where LeBron and the entire James clan, including his wife, Savannah, and their three children Bronny, Bryce, 16, and Zhuri, 8, joined the NBA icon on stage as he accepted an award. 

An emotional Hamlin was at the ceremony in Los Angeles to present the Buffalo Bills training staff that saved his life with an ESPY Award for Service. 

His incredible return to fitness, and the fact Hamlin is alive today, is solely down to the medical staff that treated him in the immediate aftermath of the incident in Cincinnati.

Bronny, who recently committed to the Trojans, was rushed to hospital in an ambulance after a 911 call was made at 9.26am Monday. 

The incident is believed to have been a Code 3, which signifies the seriousness of the call as it requires ambulance lights and sirens.

A spokesman for the James family said: 'Yesterday while practicing Bronny James suffered a cardiac arrest. Medical staff was able to treat Bronny and take him to the hospital. He is now in stable condition and no longer in ICU. 

'We ask for respect and privacy for the James family and we will update media when there is more information. LeBron and Savannah wish to publicly send their deepest thanks and appreciation to the USC medical and athletic staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes.' 

This incident is the second time that USC medical staff has responded to a basketball player with cardiac arrest during practice.

Last summer, Vince Iwuchukwu collapsed at a practice and was revived by USC athletic trainers. He returned to playing basketball six months later.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk claimed that the Covid-19 vaccine may have caused Bronny's collapse. sparking outrage on social media.

'We cannot ascribe everything to the vaccine, but, by the same token, we cannot ascribe nothing,' Musk wrote in response to a media report on Tuesday. 

'Myocarditis is a known side-effect. The only question is whether it is rare or common,' Musk's tweet continued. 

Bronny, who committed to USC in May, took another step on the path to following his father's basketball footsteps by choosing to wear his iconic No 6 at the school for his freshman year. 

USC revealed the exciting news on their Twitter page, writing alongside a graphic: 'FIRST LOOK: Bronny James will wear No. 6 for the Trojans.'

His father LeBron, of course, is synonymous with the No 6 from his glittering career with both the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat - although he has also worn No 23 before.

This year, the 38-year-old James became the leading points scorer in the all-time history of the NBA, overtaking Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's tally of 38,387 career points.
