Police are seeking Farrakhan Muhammad, 31, who allegedly tried to shoot his brother when he fired bullets into a crowd, hitting two women and a young child

The gunman suspected of shooting several innocent bystanders in Times Square on Saturday was aiming for his brother, who reportedly later gave his name to authorities, it has been claimed.

The New York Post is reporting Farrakhan Muhammad, 31, is the prime suspect in the shooting, which left hundreds of terrified shoppers and tourists fleeing for their lives.

Police are still hunting for the suspect, who reportedly sells CDs for a living.

Detectives made the crucial breakthrough when they approached a man on West 31st St in Manhattan on Sunday after they thought he looked suspiciously like the wanted man, The Post reported.

'I'm his brother,' the man told the detectives.

Police have since released Muhammad's mugshot and are appealing for help in locating him.

Muhammad had been arrested last year on suspicion of assault.

Meanwhile, an  NYPD officer is being hailed a hero after a video of them clutching a a small child while rushing from the scene of the shooting has gone viral on social media.

The officer has been widely praised for cradling the toddler and taking her to safety.

Victims have been describing the scenes of panic and confusion as they tried to evade the gunfire.

A Rhode Island woman has told how she collapsed in a pool of blood after she was shot at random in Times Square yesterday by a gunman who also wounded another woman and a four-year-old child.

The man allegedly opened fire in the crowded tourist  zone in midtown Manhattan after getting into a heated argument, sending hundreds of people fleeing for their lives.

Wendy Magrinat, 23, on a sightseeing trip from Rhode Island, was shot in the leg as she stood in line for the Line Friends store on Broadway just before 5pm with her husband Yoel, their 2-year-old daughter Elise, and her mother, stepfather and 8-year-old sister.

She said she heard a fight break out between several men standing close by.

She and her husband tried to move away but before she could get to a safe distance, she was shot in her right thigh.

'I just covered it and ran a little, just to get my daughter and my family to safety — but I couldn't. The pain was too much, and I dropped to the floor,' she told The Post.

Magrinat started screaming 'I don't want to die, please help me!', but says onlookers began filming her with their mobile phones rather than help.

'I understand … people get in shock. But if you're in shock, you shouldn't be recording. But that's how people are right now,' she told The Post.

Luckily, the bullet missed arteries, bone and muscle, and Magrinat says she is expected to make a full recovery. Her daughter and husband were unhurt.

Danae Romero, 16, said she was waiting in the queue at the same store with her 4-year-old niece Skye Martinez when the shooting began.

Romero said the pair ran for their lives - but Skye was struck by a stray bullet.

'She didn't feel anything. Even when we noticed when we were at the corner, she wasn't crying,' Romero told the Post.

It's not clear if the young girl being rescued by the NYPD officer in the viral video is Skye Martinez.

Romero said Skye, who is from Brooklyn, had managed to stay calm throughout the ordeal, and was in a stable condition in hospital.

'She's pretty tough, I guess,' Romero told the Post.

'She's always been happy. There aren't many times when she cries and stuff,' she said.

She said her sister, Skye's mother, was in a state of shock after the shooting.

She called on police to arrest the gunman quickly.

'What if he ends up hurting some more people? 'Cause if he's able to do it in a place where there's so much people like Times Square and not care, what's going to stop him from doing it again?' she said in an interview with the Post.

A third victim, New Jersey woman, 43-year-old Marcela Aldana, was shot in the foot. All victims are expected to recover.

Magrinat, who had been in New York for a family reunion, said she had lost a lot of blood after being shot in the leg.

As she begged for bystanders to help get her daughter Elise to safety, she said a crowd of people around her began filming.

She said she was bustled into an ambulance along with  4-year-old Skye, and rushed to hospital.

Surgeons decided against removing the bullet in her leg immediately, to avoid causing more damage, and are keeping the 23-year-old dosed up on painkillers.

During the ordeal, Magrinat was terrified that her daughter Elise might have been harmed.

But she says the 2-year-old was too young to understand what was going on, and when she saw her parents run, she laughed, thinking it was all a game.

The NYPD released pictures of the man suspected of carrying out the shooting.

Addressing the Times Square shooting, NYC mayoral candidate Andrew Yang said public safety was 'paramount' and promised to establish a new 'anti-violence plain clothes unit to reduce guns and gun violence'.

'The police will be key to our recovery,' he said.

On Saturday, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said none of the victims were related or known to each other, and that they are believed to be innocent bystanders who were struck by stray bullets after a man got into an argument with someone else and began shooting wildly.

Shea said Magrinet and her family had traveled from Rhode Island to Manhattan to visit the Statue of Liberty, but finding the ferry closed decided to visit Times Square instead.

A traffic camera on the scene caught the moment that the crowd of tourists fled in terror as the shots rang out.

NYPD investigators recovered three shell casings at the scene, which appear to be .25 caliber, Commissioner Shea said.

The shooting unfolded after two to four men got into a dispute, and at least one of the men pulled out a gun and began firing, Shea said.

He said that none of the victims who were shot were involved in the dispute, and that they all appeared to be innocent bystanders.

Mayor Bill de Blasio reacted to the shooting on Twitter, saying he was glad the victims were in stable condition.

'The perpetrators of this senseless violence are being tracked down and the NYPD will bring them to justice,' he tweeted. 'The flood of illegal guns into our city must stop.'

De Blasio, who was celebrating his 60th birthday on Saturday, did not join the police commissioner for a press conference at the shooting scene.

Asked about de Blasio's remarks, Commissioner Shea said that his officers have been taking guns off the streets at an 'alarming rate over the past two years.'

'It's time now that we have consequences for those,' he added, seeming to refer to bail reform policies that see many suspects, including those caught with illegal firearms, walk free without posting cash bond.

'How many more kids do we need to be shot before we realize that bad policies have consequences?' said Shea. 'We need action, and we need policies regarding laws to have consequences.'

Tourist Chris Ruby, 44, was struck as he walked down West 38th Street in Manhattan in the early hours on April 7, returning to his hotel after watching a baseball game.

The Missouri native was rushed to nearby Bellevue Hospital where he was treated for the gunshot wound, which fractured both his collarbone and his shoulder blade.

'I felt this huge pain in my shoulder,' Ruby told ABC 7 after he was discharged from the hospital later that day.

'I [then] took off my jacket, and there was blood everywhere. It was really bad.'

Police say they believe Ruby was not the intended target of the shooting, and that he was simply caught in the crossfire.

Purported gang member Brannovan Martinez, 21, was arrested over the incident on the day of the shooting and has been charged with assault, criminal use of a firearm and reckless endangerment. He has multiple prior arrests for drugs and assaults.

Ruby says he saw the suspect appear to aim his gun toward someone else before he was accidentally struck.

Robert i do not blame those politicians, its the idiots who believes in them and keep voting for them, they dont see anything wrong with all that, they are satisfy as they complaint about tye same problem like the rest of us suppose to care, some people voluntary enslave their selves because they were born to be slaves, you just have to leave it be, the states who are getting those stimulus are the one going down in poverty, the democrats are so dumb they release the job report of 1 million jobs when it was only 200k and when they caught them and said they were wrong Biden said his plan was for a year not 60 days, but not facing the facts that he will get caught in the lie, i wonder what he will say a year from now when jobs do not improve, so far none of those lazy free loaders want to go back to work, they are enjoying that government hand outs and the summer will be worse

Tyrone thanks, there are those who comes on here and repeat every thing they hear from the media that is set to control their mind, but will argue with the truth because either you and i said it, or because they never heard it before, so it must be a lie, since thats the case we can beat their head with the truth and have them research it, so they can see how long they have been lied too, i was debating with a few people yesterday, they are all left confuse looking at each other because they cannot explain how come they government fond money so fast to create that vaccine, but dont have no money to help reduce the price of medications and copay? But just give it time every one soon find out all about that vaccine, then take a seat to listen to their complaints, Trump said America can make medications as cheap as other country, we can make medical expense as for doctor visit and copay a thing of the past, every one went against him, the poor people did not realize they were conditioned by the rich people in the pharma business to hate Trump because they were concern about their money, they started the campaign against Trump than poor people follow.

What is ot worth to call a man my friend but he is out to destroy me and my family, what is it worth to have someone talking nice to me but treat me as an animal, what it is worth for someone to act tough with me but trying to do everything that can help me?

If you ask me ill take that person who acts like my enemy but look out for my well-being, i didnt need Trump to be nice to me or be my friend, i needed my private life amd my family life to be good under his policies, i wanted to be able to build a better life for tomorrow, i wanted business opportunity as well as good job opportunity, any one who has a brain and thirst for success can go back and understand his policies and they can see they were for all people, it was up to us to find out how we can use them to our best ability, instead there are those who are in favor of hand outs and charities, because they are lazy and love to get it easy so others can do for them, i hope those same people knows how to count, so far how many $ trillions of stimulus are we up to, where is all that money coming from, how are we going to pay for it? Thanks for enslaving your kids because some of us will set life for our kids to get by, look at your payroll and sales tax its coming, your tolls, your tickets, every government services price will rise, do you actually think only the rich will pay it, what about when someone repeal the taxes on the rich like biden did the Trump policies? They will pass them up to you, your problems are yet to come, you fall for the bait to embrace poverty like you were supposed to, some of you were meant to die broke, while businesses in 2020 have been destroyed, about over 500k new businesses have been created, which one are you? In the mean time the lazy one collecting stimulus refuse to go back to work, which will cause more businesses to disappear, well done idiots you did it, wait for it, its coming

I will speak the truth whether across the globe, whether is in a book of social media, i didnt need some news media to tell me what to say, i dont need no doctor to tell me anything i write, i have been doing my own research to find out where i stand, when ever i heard some doctor in a show i asked them questions they could not answer, i ask my own doctor questions, i have told every one on here every time i hear doctor fauci said something i questioned gim on the blog, via email or twitter, only a puppet just repeat without questions, i know what i know because i can those who think they are the only one with a brain, i laugh every time i walk away

Well every one says they wanted everything to open and go back to normal, you will get casualties, innocent people will pay the price of selfish decisions.

Let see they lockdown the whole country for nearly a year, they had those who lives in a box apartment with different people they dont like, which means they were forced to survived in an uncomfortable environment, you have husbands and wives, baby mamas and baby daddys who barely get along, they only stay together to share the bills, most of them barely home to spend time with each other, either they work long hours or 2 jobs, there was no time to express their anger, now they had to be stuck with each other with no where to go.

What happens if you take someone lock them up in the closet with nothing to do, but dont they do that in prison with a behavior misbehave they put them in the hole for a period of time? It calls condition in order to get you to behave the way they wish you would, with that comes mental illness and anger, the government know 90% of the public they control are weak, dumb and stupid, they used the media to condition them with that corona and they believed everything, what did they do in the lock down they are not doing now, well let see told you to lock yiur self in and wear a mask, they shot down schools, churches and jobs, those same people were still at the super market, walmart as packed everyday, now that the lock down is over you still have to wear a mask, you still have to be out in public, and then there come the vaccine, if i ask any of you who take that vaccine what are the ingredients of chemicals, what are the side effects that may cause complication with pre existing condition or medication? You dont know because you never questions the people that told you to take it or your doctor, but dont worry just wait to find out if not soon may be a year or 2 from now

You listen to your doctor Fauci and the cdc you believe in science when ever you scared to die more than you believe in God, your science tells you to exercise you make excuses, they say to eat right because obesity kills, again you make excuses, some of you never hears of Doctor Fauci before that corona, now he is your God, sonce you believe in him so much, the rest of us know mankind always have special interest, he is being the face for the government to talk to you and make you believe what ever they want thats why they tell you trust in your science, so let ask all those who so highly educated on here, those who are quick to brag about their little education and degree, away from the medica advice Doctor fauci is giving you, what is his role in the business side of the vaccine, what exactly is his relationship with that vaccine? Fizer made $4.9 billion profit with that vaccine in one year, moderna said this is the first time they ever profit that much from anything they do, now both company file for approval for all vaccine including kids and the booster shot, certain things i dont need to post on here, let hear it from those who claim they are smart and intelligent, say your part, contribute to this topic and let see what you know other than what CNN tells you
