Family and friends flooded the Brooklyn streets on March 5th for Pop Smoke’s public memorial service.
The funeral procession rolled through the Canarsie neighborhood in the borough. The late rapper’s black casket was pulled by two horses inside a white carriage surrounded by glass and curtains. 50 Cent’s custom Versace Lamborghini was also part of the motorcade.
During its route to its final destination at a Brooklyn cemetery, the carriage made its way past his mural while thousands of fans cheered and his music blaring through various speakers. Pop Smoke’s mother was present and waved to fans. A private funeral for the fallen star was held a week prior.
Rapper Pop Smoke, 20, is shot and killed by up to six masked robbers who break into Hollywood Hills home at 4:30am Pop Smoke’s family has released a formal statement on his death, thanking fans for their support.
It has become something like a nightmare for fans to know that rapper Pop Smoke, born Bashar Barakah Jackson, was gunned down inside his home in California on February 19. Naturally, his death has been a very hard pill to swallow for many persons in the industry but an even harder task for the members of his family. The Jackson family had remained silent since the tragic incident, but they’re now breaking their silence in their first public statement, with what seems to be a warning to the media.
They first showed their appreciation for the love and support that has been pouring out on social media for the rapper. “The family of Bashar’ Pop Smoke’ Jackson would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone for your support. Every prayer, call, and act of kindness is deeply appreciated as we mourn the loss of our son, brother, and friend,” penned the Jacksons.
The statement also touched on the rapper’s rise to fame, ultimately how he became Pop Smoke and how much of a role the city of Brooklyn paid in shaping his career, “Brooklyn knew him as Bashar. He was educated and nurtured in Brooklyn and his rise to fame all developed from the place he proudly represented. Within the last year, his extraordinary gifts were revealed to the world; introducing Pop Smoke.”
The final few lines of the statement seemed to take aim at media houses which have been running factless stories surrounding the incident. “Unfortunately there are no public details available regarding the murder of our loved one. We ask for respect and responsible reporting during this critical time. Thank you for respecting our family and the legacy of Bashar during this time,” concluded the Jackon family statement.
While no specific media house has been listed, TMZ recently posted that Smoke’s family took a trip to LA to conduct their own investigations shortly after finding out he had been shot. The outlet reported that the family interrogated friends and witnesses, and even asked to view the surveillance footage, in a bid to get some much-needed answers.
The Califonia Police are still investigating his death in order to ascertain if it was a targeted hit or a matter of a robbery gone bad. Smoke accidentally released his current address while showing off a few gifts on social media, only hours before his death. Some persons are convinced that this could have been the reason behind the attack. However, the police are reported still exploring other motives. So far, no arrests have been made in relation to the incident.

Rapper Pop Smoke was shot and killed in what now appears to be a targeted attack and not a home invasion according to sources claiming to have seen surveillance video.
TMZreports that surveillance video, which has not been released to the public, shows four men approaching the Hollywood Hills house around 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday, and walking around to the back of the house. Several minutes later, three of the four men are seen on video returning to the front of the house while the fourth man “apparently walked in the backdoor,” according to TMZ. When the fourth man is spotted again, he is allegedly exiting out of the front door.
TMZ cites “sources” who go on to say multiple shots were fired killing Pop Smoke whose real name was Bashar Barakah Jackson. The sources say the video doesn’t back up claims that the hit was robbery-related because “the person inside the house—presumably the shooter—did not carry anything out.”
TMZ claims its sources viewed the surveillance footage “from outside” the home. Police are still investigating the crime and haven’t released the names of any suspects.
Earlier in February, Pop Smoke released Meet the Woo Vol. 2. Last summer, his song “Welcome to the Party,” became a hit and was remixed by Nicki Minaj. The rapper also put out “Gatti,” with Travis Scott.
Republic Records, Pop Smoke’s record label, released a statement yesterday on the tragedy.
“We are devastated by the unexpected and tragic loss of Pop Smoke. Our prayers and thoughts go out to his family, friends and fans, as we mourn this loss together,” the statement read.
Rappers 50 Cent and Nicki Minaj also paid tribute to the 20-year-old on Instagram.
“No such thing as success without jealousy, treachery comes from those who are close. R.i.P,” 50 Cent posted on Instagram.
“The Bible tells us that jealousy is as cruel as the grave. Unbelievable. Rest In Peace, Pop,” Minaj posted on IG.
