Bystanders are seen shaken by the mass shooting - with the gunman responsible for the tragedy still at large as of early Sunday morning

One witness told The New York Post that the gunfire came as a complete surprise - and didn't appear to be caused by an altercation.

'I heard shots and I ducked. When I stuck my head up, and the smoke cleared, it was pure pandemonium,' he recalled.

Mayor Bill de Blasio posted shortly after midnight on Sunday: 'We had a terrible shooting in Brownsville tonight that shattered a peaceful neighborhood event. Our hearts go out to the victims.

'We will do everything in our power to keep this community safe and get guns off our streets.'

rafael monzon you are so right on the money, so sad others dont see it like you do theu are sitting around for white people to make change for them but dont realize they have to change, i have been speaking on it for years how they are pushing out the people in the community and white people are moving in, negros still not paying attention, every whitw person are in the streets of brownsville walking their fifi dogs thats when you know your neighborhood is no longer yours , but wait for it its going to get even worse and then it will be come a white community

  1. No this will not stop gentrification it will only act as a reason to enforce it. I worked in Brownsville for 10 years and I seen a lot. No matter who is in control at the time the area remains the same because we dont change. It will never be in the best interest to change something that you can exploit. About a year ago the city approved 1 billion for the gentrification of East NY and Brownsville so it's coming. There are a lot of homes being built right as we speak guess who they're going to sell them to? So while we continue to have incidents like this and we as a community don't move to change ourselves or our mindsets, then the transition will be so easy. Problem is where are they going to force people to go. We would rather look fly then to own a piece of property cause we would have to pay taxes on it. Got to escape this free money and how to get over mentality we been force fed. Change will not come if even we are on here jockeying for who's smarter or who's comments are viewed as insensitive. We know what the problem is and it's time to start taking away the excuses. We are all entitled to have a difference of opinion. Just remember some still have hope that we'll get it together some have offered a hand and it slapped away others have been through it and have already moved on. Regardless of where you stand in that equation you have to agree it starts with us. We have people like Stroke who has his own and is already ahead which we could use his expertise on setting up a business then we have Women Rising who sounds like she is in touch with the youth and is finding it to be a struggle because she is just one person outnumbered by the crying eyes of people who live in the community but is trapped there. Then you got Nexus who sounds like he's ready to back the cause which is great. S Young who sounds like she's taking this hard as she should. Then you have myself that is willing to talk with anyone about finding a starting point. None of us have every corner covered please keep that in mind. Not everyone will want to commit to the idea of coming together and I'm ok with that. but we will have to acknowledge that we won't be able to save everybody either.

This is just sickening. Brownsville isn't getting any better after all these years!! Maybe they think this will stop gentrification from happening there. An old timers event is supposed to be peaceful not a f***** shootout. Just so frustrating!!!

@mr1stroke who ever is in office will not stop anyone who made up in his mind that he wants to kill someone. there are more white people killing each other then there are black people killing each other, but you dont comment on that. What have you ever done to help one black person up that you are not related to? I see in one of your past comments that your family owns a business between Brooklyn and Queens.. reading your past comments  gives me the impression that you are sucking all you can out of the black communities and at the same time, turning your back to them. You come across as nothing more then a white slave owner in black skin.

you voted for De blasio but look at your community, you voted for Cuomo he never acknowledge the crimes in the community, a vcity that takes away the right ofr self defense from innocent citizens, but events like this prove how they dont care about the black community, with so many NYPD at that event but 2 people open fire not one of them were caught, you people are idiots, how long have i been telling you people, the community will be like a war zone, its sad, i cant count how many festival i have been through so far this summer and people just like each other, many fairs for the kids, but the negros cant even come outside or sit in front of their houses, but cant even get together to an event, there is no way you will catch me in those neighborhood, i already know the outcome, people in brooklyn know better not to invite me over their house for bbq imagine me at a block party, f*** no, let the niggers kill each other, while the politicians smile and get funding to fattening their pockets
