Inside the town built for sex offenders: Florida 'safe haven' where 200 convicted sex criminals and their relatives live side by side

In southern Florida, at the edge of the everglades, surrounded by the sugarcane fields, lies Miracle Village, a small religious community of around 200 people. In this tidy bungalow community, half of the residents are registered sex offenders - meaning they were found guilty, served a prison sentence, for sexual related crime. Aside from one woman offender, they are all men. Some of them were in a consensual relationship with a minor, some viewed child pornography or were convicted of molesting their own children. Due to the strict laws dictating where they can live once their prison time has been served, this community has made the choice to instead live together, self-govern and try to build a normal life, deep in an isolated sea of sugar cane fields. They hope to create a model of post-prison life for sex offenders that can be exported to other areas around the country.

  • Miracle Village, just outside Everglades in south Florida, was established in 2009 by the late evangelical pastor Dick Witherow
  • Borne out of religion, it is place where registered sex offenders can live without judgement and repent their sins
  • Many offenders find…
