For African Immigrants, Bronx Culture Clash Turns Violent

The storefronts on a stretch of Webster Avenue in the South Bronx tell the story of local shifts as well as any census: a Senegalese-run 99-cent store, an African video store, an African-run fast-food spot, a mosque, several African restaurants.

The owner of Café de C.E.D.E.A.O., named for the coalition of West African nations, envisioned it as a community hub in the Bronx neighborhood of Claremont, where Americans would try his wife’s cassava soup and realize it’s not so foreign… Continue

South Africa's President Jacob Zuma, involved in another Sex Scandal.

Michelle Obama Fights Child Obesity, But What About Hunger?

She planted an organic vegetable garden on the South Lawn last spring, and given her interest in what comes out of the White House kitchen, promoting better eating and exercise habits for our nation's children seems not just to grow out of a real passion but to be worthy of White House attention.

It's also caught the eye of U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, who has just issued a report outlining her "vision of a healthy and fit nation."

It's about time. Some 12.5… Continue

Hungry, Homeless and Jobless in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- Shots rang out at midday along Grand Rue Dessalines, and two Haitian cops quickly knelt behind a smoldering trash pile for cover, peering out over their rifles. Things are beginning to fray in post-apocalypse Haiti as… Continue
