EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) - College students have been hit hard by the pandemic, having all of their classes go virtual and some losing their jobs.
Part of the CARES act is the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, which helps students with unforeseen expenses like technology, housing, and food. $14 billion was allocated to schools in the CARES Act, according to Margo Keys, Vice President of Student Services at Chippewa Valley Technical College. $7 billion of that went to schools, while the other $7 billion went to students by way of the schools.
At CVTC, students have to fill out a 5-question request form and submit it, and then a committee decides how much to give each student. CVTC used some of their funds in the spring, some in the summer, and will use the rest in the fall. Colleges have one year to use the funds allocated to them, as written in the CARES act.
“Money was very helpful to us to offset expenses that we incurred as we were converting services, some of the money was used for technology, some of the money was used to train faculty, we had to convert some courses extremely quickly and that money was used for training, technology, even staffing,” says Keys.
