Tom Brady is 'very hurt' by supermodel Gisele Bündchen's decision to hire divorce lawyers — marking the beginning of the end for the couple's 13-year marriage.
A source close to Brady, 45, said it's 'pretty obvious that he's hurting' and that he 'doesn't want to fight' through an ugly divorce, People magazine reported.
According to one source, Gisele, 42, 'is the one steering the divorce,' as she was the first to hire attorneys to navigate dividing their immense fortune, which includes a mega mansion that is in the middle of construction.
'She is playing offense and he is playing defense. He wants to protect himself, protect his interests, but he's only starting to go the legal route in his defense from her,' a source told People.
'He doesn't want this to be ugly, he doesn't want to fight. If the divorce is happening — and it seems like it is — he wants it to go as smoothly as possible.'
Gisele is reportedly angry after the NFL quarterback decided to un-retire weeks after saying he was leaving the game forever.
The power couple have been entangled in speculation about the state of their marriage since Brady was seen training for the football season while his wife reportedly lived in a separate home. She has since missed his first two home games, where she was a dependable presence in season's past.
A source told People in September that the couple had already been living apart for 'more than a month' when the season started. 'Gisele is busy with her own life now and has spent time away from Tom in Miami and New York,' according to the insider.
The rumors were driven home when Bündchen spoke candidly with Elle magazine in September about the sacrifices she made for her career to allow her husband to take off and have someone home to raise the family.
The Brazilian model said: 'I've done my part, which is [to] be there for [Tom]. I moved to Boston, and I focused on creating a cocoon and a loving environment for my children to grow up in and to be there supporting him and his dreams.'
During that interview, Bündchen spoke about the NFL saying: 'This is a very violent sport, and I have my children and I would like him to be present. I have definitely had those conversations with him over and over again.'
Brady announced his retirement in February 2022 - but just a few weeks later in March he U-turned his decision.

Bündchen has hired high-power attorneys and reportedly has threatened to divorce him 'several times over the past years'

Sources told People that the couple's troubles are more complicated than just Brady's return to the sport and that there's 'a lot more to it.'
One source told the magazine that 'during the season, they live separate lives,' and the discussion of divorce 'is not something that just happened today.'
Brady, however, is still reportedly struggling to come to terms with the separation because he is used to winning, the source said.
His 'very charmed life' has reportedly made the divorce proceedings 'awful for him.'
'Things always seem to go his way. He works hard, he's a good guy, he hasn't had a lot of things go wrong in his life,' the source told People.
'This is awful for him. You can tell that this really, really hurts.'
When Brady came out of retirement weeks after quitting the NFL, he wrote on Twitter that his nearly two months off made him realize his 'place is still on the field and not in the stands.'
'That time will come. But it's not now. I love my teammates, and I love my supportive family. They make it all possible.'
That support may have waivered in the months since, but Bündchen had reportedly also threatened to divorce her NFL star 'several times over a period of years' and now has high-powered lawyers in her arsenal.
'I don't think there will be any coming back now,' an anonymous source told Page Six. 'They both have lawyers and are looking at what a split will entail, who gets what and what the finances will be.'
In addition, the power-couple's Miami mansion has been halted due to Hurricane Ian, the New York Post revealed.
The two had aimed to build a forever home in Miami's Indian Creek Country Club community for themselves and their children.
The total cost of the house is set to be near $30million, as they paid $17million for the land and an additional $10.12million in construction costs for the custom mansion, according to the Post.

Brady and Bündchen are rumored to be assessing how they would divide their assets, including their property portfolio.
But the mansion seems to be tailor-made for the two, and includes an organic garden, a pickleball court, yoga terrace, a prep kitchen, main kitchen and outdoor kitchen.
The 1.8-acre property encompasses three buildings - a main house, a security post and a gym. It also ironically includes his-and-hers bathroom suites, which may never get to be used by both.
Floor plans of the home obtained by the Post shows that it spans an enormous 17,000 square feet, and includes five bedrooms and 11 bathrooms, along with an elevator, a movie theatre and a guest suite.
But after TMZ reported the relationship has been on the rocks for a while, it is unclear who will take ownership of the property or if it will be sold off altogether.
Bündchen was also recently spotted in the parking lot of her gym, along with her children Benjamin, 12, and Vivian, 9, on Tuesday with her luxurious diamond ring missing from her left hand as she locked the car door.
She styled a white sporty tank and gray bottoms while her golden locks sat below her shoulders. Bündchen's two children appeared to carry towels as they locked up their car and headed inside.
The Victoria's Secret model is rumored to be staying separately from the NFL quarterback as he returned to Tampa to practice for the upcoming Buccaneers' game.
Aside from the Miami property, the pair also have a condo in New York City worth $3.6million and another $5.7million property at an exclusive Yellowstone club in Montana.
While there were multiple destinations the couple could've ran to amid Hurricane Ian in Florida last week, Bündchen reportedly stayed with the couple's children in Miami, while Brady stayed somewhere else.
Aside from the couple's two kids Vivian and Benjamin, the former Patriots star has a 15-year-old son, Jack, from his previous relationship with Bridget Moynahan.
Another messy battle for the lawyers to decide is custody of their shared children.
Brady's net worth after beginning his football career on the New England Patriots in 2001 has skyrocketed to $250million.
Meanwhile, Bündchen's net worth is similar after spending years as a Victoria Secret model. The supermodel previously admitted that she had to put her career on the sidelines during an interview with Elle Magazine on September 13.
Bündchen was looking forward to jump starting her career again after Brady's retirement - and appears to be going forward with her goals despite Brady's decision to return to the field.
'I have a huge list of things that I have to do, that I want to do. At 42, I feel more connected with my purpose,' Bündchen told the magazine.

On his regularly scheduled ‘Let’s Go!’ podcast last month, the seven-time Super Bowl champion did not mention his marital challenges directly but spoke about the importance of family.
Brady mentioned that he has spent Thanksgiving and Christmas away from his family since joining the NFL.
'I haven't had a Christmas in 23 years, and I haven't had a Thanksgiving in 23 years, I haven't celebrated birthdays with people that I care about that are born from August to late January. And I'm not able to be at funerals and I'm not able to be at weddings,' Brady told his co-host, Jim Gray.
While rumors swirl that Brady and Bündchen's rift was spurred by the NFL star's return to the field, Dailymail.com can confirm the couple's rumored split is unrelated to Brady's surprise return.
He had initially quit his career, in part, to focus on his family - as he vowed to spend more time with them since Gisele 'deserves what she needs from me as a husband, and my kids deserve what they need from me as a dad.'
Bündchen is her husband's 'number one cheerleader' and said she would not care if he played until he was in his 50s. But the friction between the two has still resulted in them living apart from one another.
