Three injured after Amtrak train with 250 passengers on board derails and slams into another train at New York's Penn Station in middle of rush hour

Amtrak train derails at New York's Penn Station 

  • An outgoing Acela Express 2151 train to Washington DC derailed at Penn Station
  • It hit an incoming NJ Transit train on the Montclair/Bontoon line at 9am
  • Passengers on both trains evacuated, with three minor injuries reported
  • NJ Transit rail service has been suspended in and out of the station, with Midtown Direct trains diverted to Hoboken

An outgoing Acela Express 2151 train from Boston to Washington DC 'had a minor derailment while moving at a slow speed,' Amtrak said.

It hit an incoming NJ Transit train on the Montclair/Bontoon line and sideswiped it.

'The rear of the [Acela] train was still on the platform, and all 248 passengers have exited the train onto the platform and into the station safely,' Amtrak said in a statement.

Passengers on the NJ Transit train were also evacuated once it made it to the platform, Amtrak said.

Jennifer Hutzel, who was on the NJ Transit train at the time of the collision, told 1010 WINS: 'We were just pulling into the station, not going very fast and I guess another train that was leaving hit us really hard and it basically sideswiped us.' 

Another passenger Jordan Geary said the crash 'blew my window out and into me'.

The FDNY were on the scene with several ambulances parked outside the station. Three minor injuries were reported,

Photographs showed the damage sustained by both trains. The vestibule on the Amtrak train was compounded, while the NJ Transit train was scraped all along one side.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said: 'Thankfully we’re hearing there were no serious injuries at Penn Station after derailment of an Amtrak train.'

NJ Transit rail service has been suspended in and out of the station, with Midtown Direct trains diverted to Hoboken. 

Cross honoring is in effect with NJT bus, private carriers, & PATH.

Service on the Long Island Rail Road has not been affected.

I just missed that was on earlier train from jersey@mr1stroke you're so right so expensive and they do nothing to upgrade the tracks

With those old ass tracks they are charging people more for the fair but will not upgrade their system sue their asses and they will realize it cost them more not to fix or upgrade those tracks it's 2017 they are still tracks from the 60s and 70s
